Greetings you all :)

For the pst week or so I have been very happy by going minimal and carry only my Alo Solo combined with a Swiss Card 4 way screw driver and one of them can openers in my wallet.

Jut to find out what all the fuss is about I ordered me a Farmer.

Upon receiving I found it too thick for pocket carry and the lanyard loop hurted my hand.
I tossed the knife in my drawer until just now.

I spend a good hour of carefully removing the loop(no grinding tools, just snapped the biggest part with pliers and polishing with a water stone) and it feels very nice and secure in my hand now.

Since I paid good money on it, I am going to use it for a while and see of I come back to my Solo after all.

One advantage will be that I will be able to lessen the weight of my key chain :p

I'm curious...... :)

The Farmer has pretty much became my main edc, and I don't even notice it in my pocket now. Prior to getting a Farmer, I carried an Electrician or alox Soldier. At first that Farmer felt like a huge lead weight in my pocket and I didn't like carrying it ..... the Electrician or Soldier were unnoticeable in my pocket, but that Farmer seemed like "too much."

Whenever I go to a larger knife for edc, I really notice the extra weight at first, but after a period of adjustment everything settles in and gets back to normal. If you find the tool set on the Farmer useful to you, I think you'll quickly adapt to the extra weight and thickness. If, however, you don't really use the saw or bottle/can openers/screwdrivers, then your adjustment may be more difficult.

I will say that going from a single layer Solo to a three layer Farmer is quite a jump! Be sure to update us after you've given the Farmer a fair chance!

BTW, I removed the keyring stud on my Farmer, too, and like it much better that way. ;)

you could get an alox soldier latter... you wont have the hastle removing the keychain loop... and its thinner and very useful in urban environment... the screwdrivers are sturdy and the building quality would be as good as what you expect on alox 93mm series.

an alox soldier will always be one of my dearest Victorinox... i really love my red alox farmer, but my alox soldier got more pocket time =)

I carry my wallet in a front pocket and just slide the Farmer under the wallet.
It feels like it isn't there. :)

Got one of them as well. However for some reason the spring of the blade/awl got soft after 4 months.

Like that one a great deal as well. Think I'm gonna send that one to Switzerland and see if they can repair/replace it.

They don't sell the Soldier over here anymore. Only the Pioneer with the loop

Well, for the past few days I've been giving my Farmer an honest try.

I like the knife a great deal, but I still come back to my Alox Solo.

Maybe it's just an European thing; just a knife that's it.

I just don't like the bulk in my pocket I guess.

But if I ever go to the woods or something(which almost never happens, cause I'm a bit of a city slicker) I think I will carry the Farmer.

Untill then it will be IMO the best SAK ever: the Alox Solo

However, I ordered a Settler so my Solo may get some competition after all.

That's what kept bumping the bigger regular sak's out of my pocket; just a wee bit too much bulk. Plus the alox solo and settler are such darn great pocket knives. A really great pocket knife is one that's not rying to be too many different things at one time.

If you love the solo, you're gonna go nuts over the settler. It's a solo with a pen blade.

Carl.

Same like me... i almost never got any outdoor activities... i love farmer for its beauty, never even use the saw once!... yes its hold nice, but a slight bulky is also what i feel... dont change how i love it though... and MAYBE i would find a need when SOMEDAY i gone outdoor hehehe...

i love my soldier maybe like you love your solo... they're only a layer different.. still thin enough to not bumping my jeans...

at least you've give the farmer a fair pocket time...

btw, my soldier have been use for years and the back spring still as solid and tight... hope your solder is repairable...
yup, i prefer the soldier than the pioneer becousse it looks and hold nicer without the keyring...

when you got your alox soldier back from repair, be sure to give it another chance... i know the solo alox is really suits you well, but incase you need to tighten some srewdrivers, pray something like open a paint can, make a hole on something... the soldier would save the day without breaking any blade tip hehehe...

keep the farmer, you'll miss it if you let it go.... =)

Interestingly enough, the Farmer is really not that thick. It is no thicker then a plastic handled two layer knife like a Tinker. I always wanted one, but the lack of need for the saw always kept me from pulling the trigger. I just could not justify spending the little money I have on something I will only be carrying occasionally. Plus once I got my red Cadet, and realized I could get a basic scout pattern in a small, thin, unnoticeable package, it kind've made me forget about the Farmer.

cadet is a great SAK! it would handle 99% of the task you need in daily life...

if you settle with one... its hard to justice to get a farmer... UNLESS, for your enjoyment! its a beauty and solid sak...

i only use several SAKs as an EDC rotation tools... the rest is for enjoyment hehehe...

At least you gave it a fair try, spydutch! As mentioned earlier, I edc a Farmer; it suits my purposes well, and I don't even know it's in my pocket. I'm a "country boy" and find that I use the saw, screwdrivers and awl as much, if not more, than the blade.

I'm thinking of getting a Solo and making it into an "Easy Open" by filing out a notch with one of those half-round files - an idea that got planted in my head by our friend Jackknife.
