...and I suck @ sharpening. Tried it out on my spydie endura 4 and got it sharp enough to cut paper but not to shave! I know, I know... shaving sharp is overrated and a working edge is fine w/ me, its just that I want to be able to put a shaving edge on one. My technique is probably the problem, maybe not any consistency??? I did mark the edge w/ a sharpie and honed it away, but still no arm hair shaved off :(
Any advice or comments?

Practice practice and more practice.
It may be frustrating at first  but keep trying.
It took me some time before I was able to get my knives shaving sharp but I'm not quite at the point to hair whittling sharp:(

Keeping a consistent edge is key with a V edge. Most of my knives are convexed because it allows for a wider margin of error.

In the beginning it is easy to convex the edge, since you may not be that consistent yet. When you convex it, you don't hit the edge every time, so it can take quite a while to get what you want.

You can also end up w/ a burr, which will give you fits as well.

Just saying, don't give up on it. Yes, there is a bit to it, but you WILL get there with some practice.

You may be putting too much pressure when you are sharpening. I found that if i just lightly glide the knife over the stone with no pressure, it got much sharper!

Try it out and let me know how that goes!

Second. I've found a light touch goes a LONG way with DMT stones. And consistancy. But to be honest, I've gotten lazy and use my sharpmaker for most maintainance these days

Practice on cheaper knives first before you fudge up a good one. Medium pressure. Let the diamonds do the work and concentrate on angle.:)
And yup , Practice lots!

Sinsanity is right. I found that as the knife starts to get sharp I can back on the pressure and it will come along much easier. Not sure that is your problem but it was mine.

I have a sharpmaker... but I have found that only works w/ certain knives (grinds)... like a BM rukus for example... works great on that one... but when I try to hone my emerson cqc8 it pretty much dulls it...
