I am still a little freaked out about it, but it was a strange deal.

This morning I was sleeping and at 3:45am my doorbell started ringing. At first I thought I was dreaming, but then it rang a few more times.

I live in a medium sized lake community in a rural area with no town or businesses nearby, so "foreign" foot traffic is unusual during the day, let alone at 4am....

I pull on some jeans and grab my glock 23 and head downstairs to see what's up.

There is a kid in his early 20's; neatly dressed in khakis, button up shirt and a dark jacket, with a backpack, standing on my porch.

I put the glock behind my back, and opened the door and immediately told him to step back off my porch, and what do you want?.

He said he was "lost and trying to get to Pekin", a town that is at least 13 miles away.

The kid had no car that I could see. I told him that what he was doing was not good (i.e. ringing doorbells at 4am), and he said "I know, I was afraid someone would have a gun!", to which I replied "Well I Do!".

He took a few more steps back and his eyes got real big.

I then explained how he was going to get from my drive to Pekin, and he thanked me and walked away briskly into the darkness.

That certainly got my adrenaline going, so I could not get back to sleep anytime soon. In addition, I was not sure if I had just been cased, so I sat up for a while listening to the police scanner on my google phone.

After I had a few minutes to think about it, I called the sheriff and let them know to watch for this fellow, as I though there was a chance he might go to a neighbors house to do the same routine, if in fact it was a routine.

I am still a little freaked about this event, coming the day after Illinois adopted concealed carry.

I am glad that I was there and my wife was not alone. I am also glad I had my Glock. It made me feel like I had a little control over the situation, although I never did show the piece to the fellow.

Just wow.

amazing. and yes, more than a little strange. glad to hear you're all safe.

JFC, Andy! That would definitely get my blood pumping.

One hell of way to start the day.

Glad nothing came of it, and hopefully nothing does.

Really wants me to start sleeping with a gun beside the bed.

Scary stuff. Allow me to suggest that it would have been best not to open that door, and that the only time that anyone will know whether I had any form of weapon would be sometime after it has been used on them. This one kid may have been trying to locate and isolate your position while his buddies took you from behind; trouble may find us but let's neither invite it in or make it easier for them.

Gun...better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I'm glad everyone is safe.

That`s downright spooky, glad all worked out ok. I was wondering why I saw your name at the bottom of the page early this morning.

I agree with n2s. In fact best thing to do is call the Police and let them find and ID him. I would assume they would also find the situation odd and try to find out his real reason for being there. Either way though, the guy would know that people in the neighbor hood are heads up and he should find some where else to walk around at 4 in the morn.

First off glad your ok and everything worked out. A few things though like others said. next time definitely don't open the door. you can talk through it if you feel like you need to but more than likely you were being cased. next thing is never tell anyone you have a gun. Most think it may help deter the situation but in all reality if he is casing the place he now knows there are guns inside for the taking. Then immediately you need to call the police so they can come out and ID him that way if there was any break ins at your neighbors or surrounding areas they have a good lead on the suspect.

either way buddy glad to hear nothing came of it and you and the family are alright.

Glad everyone is OK. My motto is: When seconds count, the police are just minutes away!
Similar situation last year; semi-rural area with only a few houses in the middle of a golf course, 1am and three guys (drunk) pounding on my door and ringing the doorbell. I went downstairs with my Glock 22 (.40cal) in my hand. Left the door locked, turned on the porch light and yelled at them to go away, I had a gun, and I had called the police (I hadn't). Actually had a bead on them with my Glock through the side-light, in case they tried to break in. After a little more yelling they went away.

After effects of adrelalin left me shaking like a leaf. I should have called the police then, but waited until the next day. I had a description of the car, but that was not enough for them to follow up. I have a light on my Glock and thought about lighting them up, but didn't. Have thought about adding a red laser light for the deterrent effect of seeing a red dot on your chest (I have Crimson Trace lasers on a couple of other pistols) but I don't want to point a gun at anything I am not prepared to shoot.

The whole situation made me more aware than ever of how vulnerable we can be even in our own homes.

I`m glad you did not go all DBH on him!

Maggie had the DBH upstairs, and I only took the glock .40 and not the DBH for the perp's mother, I wanted her to be able to have open casket.... (joke of course...)

Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

I have had a couple of defensive pistol courses, and all of that went out the window. I had about 1.5 minutes from the time I got out of bed and got to the door. I had just been awakened from a sound sleep, and had the adrenaline flowing.

It's just like they tell you, unless you train to make it perfunctory, you will likely make bad decisions when it comes to bear.

The fellow seemed like he was going to keep ringing the bell, so I did decide to open the door. Since there was nobody at my back, and my wife was upstairs, and I had 13 rounds of .40 sw to bring to bear if needed, I was ok with opening the door.

Telling him I had a piece was not a good idea, and point well taken and registered! I think that came out because I was a little angry and in disbelief at the situation.

I did only take 5 minutes before I called the incident into the police. At least I was able to provide what I think was a decent description.

Thank you folks for all of your feedback; it is nice to have a community that I can share this with that will provide feedback other than "I can't believe you keep a gun at home!"

Strange indeed! Glad it all worked out and your Glock didn't get too much excercise.

Hopefully he didn't wake anyone else up either.

Wow is right Andy.I'm glad you were there & Maggie wasn't alone.
But that begs the question..does she know how to handle the Glock or even better,a shotgun, should a similar situation arise in the future & you are not home?Or you are home & she can back you up?

That sucks man. I live in a decent area in Dallas and spooky stuff happens all the time, so much that the wife and I are so ready to move out to the country. We keep having shady solicitor problems and people coming to the door asking for weird things. I have called the city and they said if they dont have a City permit around there neck and we have a sign that we should call 911. When someone comes to the door and they miss my "no solicitors" sign, I usually alert them that Im armed and going to call 911 through the door if they dont leave now. Unfortunately in the world we live in now, people prey on weakness and you have to show some kind of aggressiveness or they will think they can take advantage of you. Stay safe.

Have you guys ever read Don DeLillo's White Noise? I grew up in inner city Brooklyn, in a working class neighborhood. I practically grew up in violence being the only Asian kid at the time in a neighborhood that was all Italian on one side and all Puerto Rican depending on what side of the avenue you lived on. And now that I live in the suburbs I give folks the benefit of the doubt. Drunk guys hanging out near a course they may play at seems relatively benign. A kid that is potentially high on some recreational drug seems relatively benign. I'm not criticizing mind you, one must do what one must feel is best for their family. But I just hope no one escalates their alertness to a level of violence that they cannot take back.

Very glad this worked out for you! Another reason why citizens MUST be allowed to own guns and not depend solely on the police for protection. I hope you are able to get a peaceful nights sleep tonight

I had a similar incident a cpl years ago. I worked for the Sheriff's Office at the time (pd now) and worked 8p-8a. Just as I was starting to get a shower I heard a commotion outside then my doorbell. I open the door in shorts t shirt and a pair of crocks. I find this young guy standing there out of breath. He was saying he had just been jumped and needed help. As luck would have it I had picked the guy up on the side of the road the night before and gave him a ride home but he was so out of his gord he had no clue who I was. I told him sure I'd help him out, about that time he noticed the patrol car in the driveway. All of a sudden he bolts and I chase after him, why I have no clue, he's running so I'm chasing. Well he runs into the woods and crosses a barbed wire fence. I had long since ran out of my crocks and decided to dbl back since I knew where he lived. So I get home and jump in my patrol car and turn on the radio, turn out he had just beat his mother and was running from the deputy's on duty. We ended up cornering him in the wood and hooked him up. I went to work that night with cut up feet. Sometimes we act before we think... No matter how much training we have
