found and Welland vale axe head. It's 5 3/4 inches long has 3 1/2 inch cutting edge. It weighs 2lbs 1.3 oz. There is DHO stamped in-between the Welland vale stamp and the true temper black prince stamp. I would like any info about it. Was from my father's estate. It's in very good condition. I don't know how to post a pic.

Ok thanks for that I've done lots of research and know the history and approximately the age. It's the DHO stamp that has me little stumped. I'm very new to forums and don't know the in and out of how they work. Can I post pictures in this thread?

Thanks for that info. I live in Ontario and family were farmers in Welland Ontario. The DHO now means more to me thinking it might been use to work the roads I drive today.

Ya so the Welland vale stamp along the blunt edge. Then between it and the black prince stamp is the stamp DHO which could-probibly means department of highways Ontario.

Here's a guy who has a "DHO" stamp on his WV.

Here's another at an auction, so they are not rare. online-antique-unplugged-tool-auction

Here's an eBay listing for a Department of Highways Ontario axe, which matches what the first source said.

So there is 1 for sale. It's 100 bucks. Mine mint looks to be never sharpened. To say they not rare might be understatement. True temper black prince DHO very vintage not that easy to find. Thanks for the DHO input that was very informative.
