Welp I'm going to try to make a sheath: two things.

After my other thread here I decided to take the dip and start but I have two concerns before I go:

1. Is buying tools and leather from Tandy (the chain store) any good? They're in my area so it would be very easy to get supplies from them. I need an awl, hammer, waxed thread and the fork, and the leather itself. Are they just cheap chinesium that's upsold or decent enough when it comes to wear and tear over time or in the field?

2. Where do you get the stamps with the company logos? I'd need a Spyderco and Benchmade one. Was the butterfly stamp in Gary W. Graley's thread just a generic or was it Benchmade one?

Nothing wrong with Tandy’s products. I still use plenty of things from them all the time. I still consider myself a newbie. So my advice is to start simple. Get the things you’ll need to use the most. You can always add more later and upgrade the items you feel you need to. This hobby can get expensive fast if you let it. Just my .02 worth, hope it helps. :-)

The butterfly stamp is a generic 3D from Tandy/LF. Do your home work before you have Spyderco, and Benchmade stamps made. Those logos are proprietary and protected by trademark law. The companies involved have to give written permission for the licensed use to keep you out of
trademark violation trouble.

I have been making sheaths for about 15 years. Still using all my original Tandy leather tools.
Good to know. I will get the tools I need there then out of convenience and I want a business like that to stick around for the kids and all. I'll still skip ones if they're made in china that is.

Yeah that's true, as they wouldn't want their name going towards something YOU make money on or looks like crap. I wonder what I could do. I'll get the butterfly for the benchmade, as my benchmade field service kit also has a butterfly on it. My spyderco ionno, I do not know. The spyerco logo isn't a spider so I'll have to think of something creative or use the front panel of the sheath that the knife came with.

I started last year with Tandy's and amazon purchases and I'm afraid most tools you'd find at low prices are made in China. Some are better than others and taking the plunge in US made tools can be a sobering experience. If you're going to do any stamping, be selective and if possible check them first. I decided to buy Barry King stamps and while not the most expensive, they are a fair bit more than the Tandy ones but the quality is stellar. Leather is another important factor, Tandy's is affordable and great for practice but Hermann Oak is much better once your skills are up.
I started last year but I'm sure the more experienced members will chime in with better advice.

Oh my man, I will definitely check them out. I know it sounds stupid but I want leather tools made by people who outfitted cowboys. Just makes me feel cooler and I kinda worship tools. Still, I already made two leather pouches, but freehand with Tandy's waxed thread, nails, and a big needle. Do you think I'm good enough to go to Hermann Oak from here? Want me to show you my pouches so you can gauge if I'm good enough for nicer leather?

Be proud of your work, we all had to start somewhere, post some pictures if you want to. Buy some Tandy's leather to practice on, I still do. Hermann Oak will be quite a bit more but quality tells and then there's the WC leather....I still have Tandy's leather, I make badge holders for my co-workers and practice my stamping. I use two needles saddle stitching and use 0.8 mm Tiger thread and use the same "el cheapo" china special pricking irons. I also use the Tandy edge groove cutters, they work well and I see no sense in buying something else at this time. Make sure you have strops and keep your tools sharp.
