Welt Importance?

I'm wondering how important a welt is in the average sheath. I do know it protects the threads from the knife edge, but could anyone else learn me on it a little more in depth?

I'm at the point in my second sheath to either put a welt in, or not. I'm short on funds, so buying a book ATM is not an option for me.

You're right about the protecting the threads part, but it also gives the blade an overall better fit in my opinion. A welt isn't too much leather, and you can probably use some of the bigger scraps you have to make one.

Great Tutorial! I finished both welts on my sheaths tonight. Hopefully it all comes together right, they're my first ones.
