Welt Lock - the sequel

Some time ago I posted a sheath I designed that utilized an integral, movable part of the welt along with a side strap to secure the knife. It has the advantages that it eliminated the possibility of cutting straps, it is quite secure and the knife goes in and out easily. It does work well and has become a favorite of my customers. Unfortunately, it does not work well for knives with wide blades that are at or near the depth of the guard because the blade will cut the lock as it is inserted or removed. Recently, I completed a camp knife that has that feature and yet the customer still wanted me to work out a way to provide a welt lock sheath. To solve the problem, I decided to make the lock as a separate piece rotating about a pivot so it could be easily moved out of the way as the blade was inserted or removed. I can't say is is perfected yet and it certainly adds complexity but it does work and the customer is happy. I though some of you might be interested in how it works. I have also included a couple of photos of the original design for information. As always, much credit to Paul Long for tooling and design ideas.Camp_4.jpgCamp_3.jpgCamp_1.jpgP1010207.jpgP1010063.JPG Enjoy.

Well, Randy, the sequel is even better than the original. A neat improvement on an already great idea.

Is the rotating lock made of leather or some other material? It almost looks like high density plastic in the photo.

Paul,
The lock is a leftover piece of the canvas micarta I used for the knife scales. It could almost be anything, even stacked leather. I did glue a very thin piece of leather to the contact surface to protect the knife.

Proof positive that there is still some pretty darn unique thinking in the sheath world! Well done! :)

Now thats movie material there, I can see the hero popping the knife out of the sheath and catching it in mid air. :p

In real life it would more likely be like that poor fellow in Road Warrior that got his fingers removed by that boomerang. :D

Just some food for thought...I messed around with this concept a few years back and it can also be done without the strap if you put the snap on the welt lock itself. I really liked the way it worked, very secure. Nice looking sheaths you have there!!! Here are pics of two different designs.

Innovation at it's best!!! Gents I agree with Lethal289 & jhakken cause this is some outstanding work and genius at work.

Chuddy Bear,
Very cool and clean design and implementation. I did try something like that but had trouble with people banging the snaps on some blade shapes when they tried it. It did work well for others however. Probably just my approach.
