I wanted a back-up folder to keep in my grab bag, and since a SAK would work great for that, I ordered a Ranger 58 from Wenger. I got it yesterday, and here are my impressions:

First (and more important of all) is the size: the thing is HUGE! It's a beast of a folder, and that kills it for EDC
. With this size and weight, it will only work in your bag or pack. In fact, it's so big that I won't be carrying it in my grab bag, I'll only use it as a back-up when I go backpacking.

The big characteristic with this folder is that it's a one-hander and with a liner lock. The ellipsoid hole on the blade isn't what I would call comfortable but works very well. To close the blade you just have to press the Wenger shield on the handle to disengage the lock, and it works beautifully.

All in all, this is a GREAT folder, but unfortunately it's just too big if you wanna carry light, and it's also impractical to carry in your pocket - you will have to get a belt sheath. It came very sharp right out of the box, and all the tools (none are lockable) work just as fine as any tools found on SAKs from Victorinox or Wenger. For a camping folder I think the Ranger will rock, because it's comfortable in my hand and has a good enough size to maybe even take the place of a smaller fixed blade. For instance, I would carry an ESEE-6 as my primary blade in a camping trip, and would take an Izula as a backup, but the Ranger 58 could very well substitute the Izula.
So if you're looking for a BIG folder that has a few tools, the Ranger would be a nice option
. However, I think this is only for those with big hands.
