I am very interested in a Wenger Ranger. The model I have in mind has:

--only one blade

--that blade is plain edge, not serrated

--one hand opening

--a side clip for pocket carry

Some sites list this as the 51, but Smoky Mountain claims it is the 151.

Thus, I have two questions:

1)anyone know which model this is?

2)Any recs for where to order it from? Because of the confusion, I'm worried I will get the wrong model (e.g. serrated, no pocket clip, etc.). What dealer of these knives is generally more reliable and accurate.

My thanks, as always.

I would buy any Vic or Wenger from FelineVet, fveap@earthlink.net. His prices are great, his service is the best, and he's honest as they come. Furthermore, all profits from his sales go to a non-profit veterinary foundation that provides vet services to help kitties whose owners cannot afford to pay for the care. He's great.

I have that knife, it is model #16317 and it is called "Ranger 51 with clip" on the box.

SMKW has their numbers confused, from the wengerna website:
"Ranger 51 features a locking, one-hand opening, 4-inch blade"
and
"Ranger 151 features a locking, one-hand opening, 50% serrated, 4-inch blade"

FWIW, I've stopped carrying it and replaced it with a Victorinox plain edge Sentinel with clip, their model # 54885 (the picture on the swissarmy web site is incorrect, they show the model without the thumbhole, but the description is correct).

The Vic is shorter than the Wenger, but it's also flatter and fits my pocket better, and I find it easier to open. The Ranger feels better in the hand but the Vic is fine - Lets say a B grade for the Vic and an A for the Wenger in that category. The biggest difference I've noticed is that the Vic just feels more "solid".

I suggest you find (if possible) a local store that has them in stock and try them both. I just learned myself that you can't tell the difference online. But if you are buying online, you can't go wrong with Felinevet.
