Wordy Warning!!!
Went to out looking for a drill/driver (D/D) combo kit and come home with a reciprocating saw! And the drill/driver too. But it wasn't even the drill/driver I was originally looking at. I ended up getting a Dewalt DCK240C2 D/D and impact driver combo kit. Batteries which are (nominally) 20 volt lithium. I was originally looking for a small 12 volt D/D but, after listening to advice from here and friend, I decided to look at 18 and 20 volt D/Ds too. That is when I found the DCK240C2 on sale for $50 off thus making it $150. I decided to run down the road and handle the two tools in the set to see if I liked them. Well, when I got to the store I found a nice gentleman already looking at the drills. He was, in fact, holding the same Dewalt set I was looking at. And there was just one other set left on the shelf. The aforementioned set quickly found it's way into my hands. But I stayed and learned from the gentleman. He was a retired electrician, as it turned out. While we were talking, a friendly clerk wandered over and asked if we needed help. The gentleman asked about a sign hanging that said get a free Dewalt tool or lithium battery when you buy such and such $300 dollar Dewalt hammer drill/impact driver set. While he was talking to the friendly clerk, I went to speak to a friend that I saw walking through the store. On my way back I looked at the qualifying lithium battery. It was $90. OUCH! When I came back, the gentleman had a qualifying Dewalt battery in tow and I asked if he was getting the $300 set. He said, no, he was getting the $150 set and told the friendly clerk that I was getting one too because I had been walking around holding that last $150 set. Looking at me, the friendly clerk asked if I wanted a free tool or battery. I said I wasn't getting the right set. The clerk happily responded that another of the get a free tool signs had been hanging over my ($150) set and that the store would honor the sign for my set. "Let me get this straight, I said. If I buy the $150 dollar set that comes with two lithium batteries, I can pick a free Dewalt tool or battery?" "Yes." Was the friendly clerks response. I looked over at the shelf where the qualifying free Dewalt tools were and saw three tags that read $120!!!!!!!!
If I had been in a cartoon, you would have seen my jaw fall off my skull and shatter on the concrete floor. All three qualifying tools were cordless and ran on the same lithium batteries I would get in a lithium powered set. The first was an angle grinder, second, a circular saw and, third, a reciprocating saw. Corded circular saw and angle grinder all ready being in my tool stable I grabbed the reciprocating saw. The clerk led me and the gentleman to a service desk where we were handed cards allowing us to redeem the promotion at check out. I profusely thanked the gentleman for his help. In a total daze, I walked to the cash registers and handed over my card. Since a price override was involved, a manager had to be called. She calmly read the card and, after checking that the reciprocating saw was the free tool, directed the cashier to ring up both items. She then overwrote the price on the saw to $0.00. The cashier totaled the order and I walked out after paying the $150 plus state tax. IT WAS A MIRACLE! I don't what else to call it. Stuff like that just doesn't happen everyday. I am still not sure what happened to resolve this situation the way it did. But I do know if I hadn't been at the store at almost the EXACT right time, I would have missed the gentleman or clerk. And it wouldn't have worked without them both. It is still strange to me but I have the tools sitting safely in my house. Over all, one of my strangest experiences EVER!
