Wednesday I desided to do a little hike up Mount Nebo here in Central Utah. Was going to do one of the side trails, but the section of the road that goes past it was closed. So I ended up hiking up part of the main Nebo Bench (Andrews Ridge) trail. Before I continue, you probably should know a few things about this trail. The trail head is at about 6,500 feet, the peak is at 11,928, and the trail is about 8 miles long. It's a hard steep trail, but the views and scenory are worth it! Now back to the story:

Figured I would hike till about noon, find a spot, have lunch then after a break head back down. Close to noon I noticed that I was nearing a spot called the Meadow so I figured that I would just hike there and have lunch at one of the improvised camp sites that a friend and I found last year on our backpacking trip up Nebo. The Meadow is just that, a lovely mountain meadow at about 8,500 feet and about 2 miles up the trail. I had lunch their, aired out my feet and socks, took pics, made a few phone calls (3 bars in places on my Verizon phone) and enjoyed the scenory before heading home.

The sights and smells were amazing!! Everything was in bloom. I saw tons of wild flowers, Roses, edible berry bushes (but no berries yet), Deer, Chickmunks and Squirrels, birds and the like. I've been all or most of the way up Mount Nebo at least 6 times in the past, but this is the first time I was up durring the summer. The trail was hotter then in mid to late September when I normally go but the heat wasn't to bad.

Going up the trail can be tiring work, but I much prefer it to coming down. Since the trail is so streep in spots it puts a lot of strain on your knees, lower back and what not. I pulled a muscle part way down and took a break. Did some stretches durring the break which helped, but I still limped all day and part of Thursday. Will definantly need to put Ibuprofen back into my Hiking kit. It was a great time and I'm glad that I took the time to go.

I have over 100 photos in a Facebook Album here: Hiking - July 20, 2011. Below are some of the highlights from the trip:

Good looking country. Sounds like some huffing and puffing on that climb (well I'd be huffing anyhow). I rarely get to walk in rugged areas like that. Thanks for taking me along!
