Went out to eat today and thought I'd post a few pictures of supper. I have been wanting to go camping for a while but just haven't had the time. Today I started working on some holsters but then decided we needed to get out for a while. Me, my wife and my youngest son packed up some grub and hit the back roads. We didn't go camping but we did get to cook a good meal over the fire and enjoyed the evening outside. The pics are from my phone so they are not that good.

Oh great, now I'm hungry!

Looks good. How long did you have to cook those potatoes?

What knife is that in the pic?

Great looking meal there!

Love the knife shot as well - thanks!

I guess the taters were probably in the coals about an hour but I'm sure they were done before that. The skin got a little crispy but they were still really good. I put them in the coals for about 25-30 minutes and then started the steaks. I took them out when the steaks were done.

The knife is called the Appalachia Special and is shown in Olivewood. It is one of three knives I designed that were made by John. I have been keeping a few in stock on my website for a while now. http://rgrizzleleather.com/handmade-knives.html

My wife had John make this one for my 21st anniversary. He added my last initial to the other side and some nice mosaic pins.

that olive woods darkening up nicely by the look of the picture, didn't think that knife could look better then it already did!

Looks like a good time out. We are enjoying the last of the good weather here, going to get cold with snow this week.

We did the same thing yesterday. Two cast irons skillets over an open fire. Delmonicos pan grilled with butter and bacon in one, and red skins with sweet onions (more bacon & butter) in the other.

Thanks for the response RGRIZZLE. If you are using that knife to cut food, what do you use to clean/coat the blade so you aren't contaminating your food? That has been one concern I've had about using my non-kitchen knives when preparing food.

Thanks folks.

jds1,

That is a good looking meal!

To clean the knife I just use dish soap and water. As far as rust prevention, I use a light coat of food grade mineral oil. It is actually used as a laxative but is also often used to protect wood cutting boards, salad bowls, etc. I use it on my knife blades and it works good on the wood handles as well. You can get it in the pharmacy or in most grocery stores in the pharmacy isle. I have also used olive oil before but it can go rancid. Olive oil is probably fine if used on a knife that you will be using often but from what I have read food grade mineral oil is the best solution. It works well, it's inexpensive, doesn't go rancid and is food safe.
