Hi friends -

Kirill and I went to my friend Art's farmland yesterday to do some shooting. At our normal club range, we have to be good - no exploding targets.

Art says "bring it on!", so Kirill had bought some Tannerite last year at Knob Creek, which we proceeded to set up and explode it.

A load of firepower in Art's truck.

Lot's of room in the Super Crew - and that was a good thing too!

Setting up - Kirill had his home-made swinging gong - unfortunatley he was missing one of the parts and we could only use it for paper targets.

My 10-22 that I bought from Mr. K - after cleaning it up and adjusting the sight, it is a tack driver at 50 yards easy.

First we got Kirill's new Mosin Nagant on the paper - it was very accurate, and it has a heck of a kick!

We had a ton of fun - we set up several spinning targets and my 4 position self resetting drop target, and proceeded to have a ton of fun with our Ruger 10-22s, and Art's HK and Ruger Mark III at about 50 yards.

I also took the opportunity to get some practice in with my carry piece, my Kimber Ultra RCP II. I threw out a couple of those little orange "self healing" bounce targets at about 20 yards, and was able to hit it with pretty good accuracy. I am getting used to the trough-site on the little Kimber, it is pretty accurate for a 3" 1911.

Then I pulled out my Magnum .500, and Art his .460 Magnum, and we took some practice at the spinners at 50 yards. I am getting much better with the big boy, able to make the smallish (10" diameter?) target spin three out of 5 shots. The thing with the Magnum is your flinch reflex - it's tough to keep from flinching with that one. I was firing hand-loads with a 380 gr. projectile. No, not a misprint, these cartridges are the size of a double a battery!

Here is a neat shot I took when I had finished putting 6 downrange with Art's New Vaquero -

Then we pulled back to around 120 yards and started shooting the high velocity stuff at Art's gong target.
Here is Kirills JSP and my custom RRA/WOA AR15

I was able to bang the gong easily from 120 yards with the Eotech sight. Unfortunatley, Kirill was able to hit the s-hook on the chain, so the target flopped. An easy fix, but it ended our gong shooting.

I took a shot at it at 50 yards and the 5.56 round perforated the target (sorry Art!!) leaving the projectile sticking out the back side of the thick steel target.

The end of a great trip. Art is a knife guy, notice his Vic on his keychain.

Sometimes it is good to live in the cornfields, this was one occasion!

I love dinging a gong with a 10-22 loaded with a 25 rnd mag.

I only fired it 5 times, but it seemed to be pretty close - with the 45 shorts I hit the spinner once out of 5 at 50 yards, not being used to the piece.

I can't say if the sights were on or not.

I can say that my Ruger 10-22 only required a little adjustment and it was spot on through the Leupold 3-9x.

It is very satifying to hear that ding when you hit the target - not to mention see it spin. You should see them spin when you hit it with the .500!!

I literally made the heavy duty spinner plate convex with the .500 - I think that thing is 1/2 in or thicker too - that piece puts a lot of energy on the spot.

After shooting quite a few handloaded 300gr solids through my .44 mag, I can understand the "flinch factor" you are concerned about with a 380gr in your .500 mag. What I did to help overcome it was to have someone else load the gun with 2 empty chambers [leave fired brass in those chambers so you can't cheat] then they observe you as you shoot.

That Vaquero looks like mine, but mine is a .357. Those are sweet guns, love that little Kimber!

Wow, Andy, that is a lot of guns.
Looks like you had a great time.
Thank you for sharing.

wow. great pics. thanks andy. how do you like those orange self-healing targets? i just saw those the other day. i bet shooting one of those exploding targets is a hoot.

cool stuff! i have some of the self healing targets. they are cool, but i made the mistake of unleashing a barrage of 30-06 150gr PSP on them. the ball held up, but the cube was hurtin... how loud was the tanerite? i picked some up form work, but have yet to shoot it.

It's always good to live in the cornfields brother! I wouldn't live anywhere else. great pics brother. thanks for sharing again.

Thanks guys -

They work out nice! The square one is a little larger and worked out better in the tall grass. What happens to them is that they start to collect lead, and they start to increase in weight - but for .22 and handguns they are fun to shoot and they do make you reacquire the target. I like them, but I would rather have the gong spinning targets or the drop downs - variety is nice.

The tannerite was loud!! We were using the smallish charges, and they would make a big thumping boom - you could feel the concussion even from 120 yards. They also blew aluminum cans to smithereens, and drove shrapnel into the ground. Good fun!

Now that's a fun day....great post (& guns) Andy. I know what you mean about the flinch reflex with those big magnums & why I don't go much over .357 anymore. Guess I'm kind of turning into a wimp in my older years. :) I just don't get to the range as much as I used to.

50 yards is a stretch for shooting a handgun you're not used to so 1 of 5 ain't bad.

I've had a few 10/22s over the years & they are consistently accurate fun guns.

Next time out bring a sack of potatoes, they explode pretty good & you get a nice thunk when the .22 hits it.
Charcoal bricketts make a nice dust cloud when hit too.

As for the .500...hmmm,I have trouble with most 44 mags so no way Jose.
I used to have a TC Contender with a 10" octagon barrel in 44 mag & it was just plain painful to shoot.
Same for the Ruger Super Black Hawk, the squared off trigger guard always dug into the fingers wrapped around the grip.
The Colt Anaconda & Dan Wesson 44 with heavy lug were the only .44 mags I could shoot decently.

Nice Kimber, I edc a ultra tle when off duty. I used to have a colt new agent with a trough site. They do take some getting used to but are great for cc
