And got to check out some of the newer blades that have come out. Here are my impressions of-

550 Griptillian - Nice, but not for me. It felt sturdy and very smooth. Felt comfortable in the hand and the size seemed just right. One of the only folders I've seen that actually felt blade-heavy. Just didn't do anything for me. I might buy one or two as gifts for people, as it's a very nice knife. Oval hole didn't work for me at all. I'll have to get an AFCK and mini in M2 before all the round holes are gone.

770 - Gorgeous, smooth, light - and too small for me to comfortably open with one hand.

450 - Same as 770

( I can't decide whether to be bummed, since I was really excited about these knives, or happy, because there's two less knives I have to find money for)

690 - There's a winner! I've heard great things about this knife, but none of them adequately described how gorgeous this thing is. It's very light, smooth, comfortable, and, it seems, perfect in every way. If you haven't seen one of these yet, take a close look soon if you get the chance.

BM's new BC1 coating - looks great. It's not black nor does it "paint" the blade like other coatings do, it's more like a translucent polish almost. It looks way cool, but it's not a better black coating - it's not a black coating at all. The attendant at the store said that it will never scratch off, but it doesn't protect the blade from rust at all. Does anyone know if this is true?

Camillus EDC - Why didn't any of you guys tell me this thing is incredible? Definitely one of the best <3"ers I've seen. I'll be ordering a few 154CM's from 1SKS soon. Very slim, light, sturdy. Outstanding ergonomics. I think we could each use one or two of these.

CRKT new Bladelock - don't like it at all. It's uncomfortable and awkward to manipulate. Guys are right that you have to be careful closing it because the blade just flies closed. I'm glad I didn't send off money to order one just to check out the new lock. If I did I'd be stuck with another AUS6 knife, and one that I wouldn't even like to play with.

CS Ti-Lite - Very slick, but not slick enough. Not much grip security. Clip could/should be set for deeper carry. I thought the double-guard could be used Carson flipper style, but it's too short to work well for that. It can be opened very quickly by popping the thumb stud. If they had made it a frame lock instead of a modified liner lock I would have been more impressed.

Kershaw Boa - way bigger than I thought it was. This is a serious knife. I'll probably still get one, but be advised that it feels big.

Some new Buck knife, didn't get the name - had a button on the side of the handle that can be pushed to release the liner lock. Horrible design. The button is right where my forefinger sits when holding the knife. And the button has to be pushed so far in that it's just easier to use the liner lock in the standard fashion.

Timberline's version of the speed safe mechanism - worked just like Kershaw's. But had some kind of slide lock that I couldn't figure out how it worked. (I had no problem working it, but couldn't figure out how it is engineered) Seemed well made, but not my style.

CS's Axis knockoff - worked a lot like an Axis lock to unlock, but can't be easily flicked open and closed when pulling back the lock release like BM's can. I think I'll stick with BM here.

Carny Cub - As soon as these come out in D2E I'm on it!

I had a little bit of money to spend, but didn't find the chance to spend it. They didn't have the Lansky extra coarse diamond hone or Marine Tuff Cloth that I needed. And at insane prices there's no way I could have afforded even a cheaper knife. I mean they wanted $300 for a MT LCC MA! I'd love to support brick and mortar stores, but at those prices I just can't afford to.

Jason, thanks for the report! $300.00 for the LCC!?! What store did you go to, anyway? Is it in the Bay Area?

James, that was We Be Knives. The other store I went to was one of the two in North Beach.

The only good deal I saw was a Paragon mini XO-Light for about 130. And this is considering that I can't order because I still don't have a credit card, and don't want to deal with the Auto Knife forms that some of the online stores have.

. All prices are list, because lots of tourists come through Pier39...but if you obviously know what's up, don't expect prices to drop all the way to, say, gun show price levels, but you can get close.

It's kind of a strange place that way, but damn do they cram a buncho goodies into a small area

...sigh...

I wish we had more brick and mortar stores here...one chain, no real haggling.

I don't know what the mark-up is but a $100 (on the net) knife usually sells for $150. I think I saw a BM940 for $179.

Just thought I'd add my $.02 cents as I just went to two B&M stores in the same area.

I finally got in to the "knife store that's never open" on Columbus. Lots of Buck FBs, Spyderco Zytel folders, some Benchmades, and touch of CRKT (nothing really new) and some generic models. Nice folks.

Also went to the cutlery/shoe repair store down the street. That's right, resole your boots and get a boot knife in one shot. lol

The CRKT Ryan, big piece with a broad blade. Very tempting in looks.

The CRKT Bladelock, didn't like it on the net, hated it more in person. Big thumbs need not apply on this one.

Spyderco Vesuvius, rather nice, kind of a Starmate/Wegner cross. Perhaps a fancier option for folks of the two aforementioned pieces. That inlay was bright, caught my eye before going inside.

I like the inlay, lock, blade, and shape of the Vesuvius. I just hate that they did it in FRN instead of G-10. It's gotta be the best looking knife you can get for $65, but it's still FRN. Bad choice by Spyderco IMO. Maybe they'll come out with a G-10 version for us handle material snobs.
