Thanks to a lot of reading on this forum, I was able to go to SMKW as an "informed" consumer. I live nearby, and went on Friday to take a look at what they had for machetes. I was looking for at least one to learn on, to practice with use and maintenance of these tools. So here's what I came home with:

Two machetes (an Imacasa Pata de Cuche and a Gavilian), both 18" models. Also an Ontario sheath and a Lansky puck. So far I've worked on the Imacasa, which came with a blunter edge. I ended up working on it using a belt sander, a couple of files and the puck. I'm pretty happy with how it works at this point, although I'm sure I've got a ton to learn about these tools. Luckily for me, I've got a backyard full of growth that needs to be hacked back.
