Here's the dialogue at the UPS today in Toronto ON as I attempted to ship a knife I traded (packed in small rectangular cardboard box):

Me - I need to send this to California.
Them - What is it?
Me - A knife.
Them - We can't ship knives.
Me - What if it isn't a knife?
Them - Then we could ship it.
Me - It's not a knife.
Them - They'll scan it and send it back.
Me - Oh.

Since when can't UPS ship a knife? Or is it just the Canadian branches that can't? I swear, these freaking companies are out to lose every one of their customers who are sportsmen.

My biggest thrill with UPS is that they charge a customs brokerage fee on items coming to Canada from the United States. How much? A token $30 - $45. I haven't figured out how they come up with the amount. One of my lower value items got the $45 prize.

Thanks x... for the heads up on trying to ship knives with UPS. Now I have two reasons never to use the filthy rats.

UPS does not charge extra for crushing your package (which has often been my experience when receiving boxes they ship)!

No Freakin' $#*+#^%.....!!!!!!

I have not been happy with UPS.

Over the last 4-5 years and I would be making a guess on number of packages via UPS, but I will throw out a guess of about 50 packages.
Of those packages, I have probably received:

- about 4-5 damaged packages

- One package lost and never found (a custom knife - at a good price - that will be near impossible to find again...!!! :grumpy: )

- And about another 5-7 packages late delivery (per their own tracking system) at anywhere from 1 to 5 days late!!!!

That is horrible service!!!!! :thumbdn: :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

I have only had one single problem out of all of the packages shipped to me via USPS Priority!!!!!.... so far  - BUT, that one item damaged could (and should) have been blamed on the shipper for improperly / POORLY packaging the item!!!!

*** I could argue the fact that most of the packages damaged by UPS could likely have been avoided if the shipper had packaged properly/better as well.
But, when you consider I have probably received 3-4 times as many packages total from USPS including 3-4 times as many packages that have been improperly (or poorly) packaged and only one of those was damaged, I would still ultimately argue that USPS Priority is MUCH better at handling packages than UPS!!!!

Further, USPS Priority is cheaper than UPS!!!!!!! (Unless, the package is heavy???? - and even then, USPS Priority has a "Flat Rate Box" - Fixed regardless of weight as long as it fits in the box - Boxes have a big Red "Flat Rate" circle - ** The Flat Rate boxes are almost always more expensive than regular Priority unless package is very heavy!) (UPS will probably be cheaper if boxes are a certain size and weight, but almost never with knives....)

And USPS Priority is FASTER than UPS - 1-3 days vs. 1-5 days (90% of the time it seems to be about 2 days for Priority vs. 4-5+ days for UPS).
I don't think I have ever had a USPS Priority package ever take more than 3 days.

USPS ground has only been used a few times. They are slower and random on delivery times, but I haven't had anything lost yet. I am just nervous about "packages" of any value being shipped via USPS ground (read = "low priority"!!!). You never know how long it will be till they show up.

.... on the other hand with Busse and Swamp Rat, you never know when anything will show up anyway.....

If nothing else, I wish they would at least send an email notice the day the package has shipped so we can anticipate a package.... although, if I am asking, faster shipping would be better.

.

...and their 1-day shipping was just as much as the 3-day UPS charge. HOWEVER, Canada Post uses Purolator, so it remains to be seen exactly what the condition of the knife/pry tool/busse is upon receipt... I'll follow up and see how it worked out.

Progunner -- I have no idea when the policy change happened, according to the UPS personnel it was "a few months ago"...!?

gk4ever -- I thought the brokerage charge was for the effort they put in to crush the package... now you're telling me that particular service is free!? Damn, now I definitely have to ask them for a refund! ;)

Another caveat about the brokerage charges... I forget what courier it was, but I never got the invoice for some $20 brokerage charge and handling fee, and next thing I know I have a collection agency calling me up at work... wtf!??

Personally, I prefer to receive items via USPS/Canada Post, simply because I don't receive packages at work, and there are many more post offices nearby to hold a package for me rather than having to drive to the 'boons to try to find the single FedEx/Purolator/UPS depot that handles the entire GTA (ie: Toronto + suburbs).

Gah.

I think I just got a knife through UPS, I missed the drop off according to the little tag they left me. So maybe it is just Canadian UPS. I have recieved 3 or 4 knives from Canadan and recall that the Purolator came up a couple of those times. Everything went smoothly, so I wouldn't worry too much.

i could have sword that i sent my 30" ang khola via ups.... i could be mistaken though....

interesting that they dont ship knives. i wonder if they'd let kitchen knives go?

Maybe Jerry should start making spiked maces and shipping them via UPS. That might learn them a thing or two. :D

I have to agree with what has been said about USPS priority and express, I am very pleased with the service provided. I would say that it takes about a week from the package is sent from the US until it is delivered at my door here in Norway, sometimes faster. The funny thing is that I receive orders sooner using USPS from the US than orders placed in other European countries. With Fed-ex and UPS it probably takes three to six days. USPS is also half the price and the packages have been received in excellent condition.
