Hi All.

I'm new to this forum but have been interested in sharpening for a while. When I bought my first global knife I just could not believe how sharp it was and what a pleasure it was to work with.

I have since gone on to buy 3 Japanese water stones (800, 1200 & 8000 grit...same ones as Ray Mears on youtube)

I have been able to sharpen my global knives with limited success using the clips to keep the 15 degree angle.

However I have not been able to sharpen then to same level as to when I bought them, which has been a bit of a disappointment

Alas after a bit of research I decided that the japanese waterstones are not for me as I just cannot get that edge I'm looking for and have decided that the WEPS is the sharpener one for me.

My main question is to the people who are experienced in using the WEPS

Can I achieve the same sharpness using the wicked edge on my global knives to bring them back to the sharpness as to when I first bought them

An should I hang on to when the higher grit diamond stones come available?

thanks G

No... they'll be much sharper!! ;) Seriously, you'll have no problem getting them back to their original sharpness, and you'll actually find you can surpass it.

No need to wait, you'll get great results with what's avail. now. (I also don't think there's new diamond stones coming out... there is some aftermarket stones coming from a different company. But you'll get great results with what is avail. now.)

thanks G

All the factory edges I've seen on Global knives are convex to what looks like an 80 micron grit. A WE will put a great flat edge on your knives, but it won't be the same thing you had before. For that you need a belt sander or a mousepad and sand paper.

and just a question.

how long did you try with the benchstones? it's not a skill that you can get in one day. most of us struggle for months before getting a mediocre shaving edge ... keep at it a bit more, unless you want a new toy real bad ;) that's completely fine too !

3-4 4 months...have a digital micro scope ordered to see what the hell goin on

if it is a convex edge, you are using the wrong sharpener, and may not be even hitting the cutting edge. TO imagine a convex edge, think of a bullet, sloping down to a point. a edge we put on with water stones is flat, like a flat head screwdriver.

I would suggest getting a mousepad/sandpaper set up, and trying that.

ps. if you decide to get rid of those water stones, email me. Ive been looking to get an inexpensive set.

and yet... Global's recommendation to sharpen them, is to use a stone...

'magine that!!??!!

The Wicked Edge will put a great edge on them if that's the direction you decide to go...it's not necessary to use a belt sander or mousepad/sandpaper.

V edge will work great, and the precision design of the W.E. will allow you to put a much sharper edge on your knife than it came with (make sure to get the strops). If you're interested, purchase a few blank W.E. mounts and make your own convex sharpening setup that uses PSA backed sandpaper on foam or leather strops loaded with diamond grit on foam. The W.E. has much to offer if you purchase one.

Good luck.

P.S. or..you know..the E.P. works just as well :D

Cheers for the response, I would be interested, where do I get these?

You can order them from the Wicked Edge...I believe the price is 28 dollars for the pair, but easy enough to check, just call Clay on his toll free line for any information regarding the WEPS.
BTW the WEPS creates a convex edge very nicely on a knife with a different edge or it will maintain a convex edge very nicely using just the leather strops and diamond paste. Again, this info is all available from Clay on the site! Welcome to the Wicked Edge! Get ready to be very pleased with your knives. :D

All the best
