Hey guys... quick question... I'm sharpening a straight razor on my WEPS and found that going from the 1k stock diamond to the 14 micron strop is too big of a jump (even though its not according to the grand unified grit chart).... it must be something to do with how the actual abrasives are structured. This jump is not removing much of the scratch pattern from the 1k... and I have done approximately 500 strokes per side. Anyway, will I be good going from the stock 1k to the 1200/1600 grit ceramic, to the 14/10 micron strops?

forgive me if this has been covered before... I searched but could not find anything specific. Thanks for all input and help!

There are a number of threads on the WE forum treating grit progressions. Also a few very knowledgeable guys who answer such questions.

But in general, the 1200/1600 stones work fine after the 1K. I don't know what the best stropping cound would be then. According to the grit chart 14 microns is too coorse, but if you strop further then with 10, 5 and 3.5 micron compound, it wouldn't hurt too much.

And remember, guys, there's a LOT more to it than just grit size. Backing material, binding agent, flexibility and a million other factors also make huge differences. The GUGC is just intended to be a very general guide to abrasives, not the be-all end-all of grit progressions. :)

thanks guys... evert, you have a link to the WE forum?

Ok, the other forum wasn't a help at all... Not enough members to get a quick answer to my question...

So I got the 1200/1600 ceramic stones as a go-between from the stones to the 14m strop. Still
Not having any luck getting the 14m strops to erase the scratches from the 1600 stones. What can I do?

He Razor edge,

You got a quite extensive answer from one of the sharpening gurus on that forum.

I would say this, the tighter you can keep the intervals (of grit) the better. How to do that? Easy.
Go to your local Auto parts store and pick up some wet/dry sandpaper. You can fill the gaps with that and actually go up to 2500 before you hit your strops. Use your paddle as a template you cut the strips of W/D and afix with Blue painters tape (works repeatedly) you will then end up with 1000,1200,1400,1500,1600,2000,2500 - then 4 strops (if you have them)
