Were period sheaths ever worn without a belt loop?

I was just wondering if it was a common practice or not in old days to just tuck a sheath under the belt instead of using a belt loop? Was thinking trying this out on a long belt knife that I made, but I don't know if it would be period correct or not....like 18th century or so I guess.

I wasn't around then....but in the movie's.......I never see no stinkin belt loops;)

I just found this from Cold Steel Knives....

I honest to god didn't know what the little stud on the sheath was for until know... I thought it was just for decoration, but now I know it was to hold the sheath up while tucked into the gun belt. Well don't I feel like a big dummy now.:o:D Sorry for the stupid question guys.

Period sheaths were carried all sorts of different ways in different areas, to my knowledge. Using a stud will definitely keep the sheath tucked into your belt, but there were places where frogs, Scandinavian-style danglers, chain-and-locket style hangers, and all sorts of other styles.
