I have been working on some buck 110/112 knives, moding them to be take apart ,using 2/56 screws,I need a better way to cut down the screws , one menber showed a picture of a bolt cutter to use on 2/56 screws, were can I buy one, Thanks Rich
If you do much work on knives, or plan to, it's not a bad idea to keep a variety of mini screw sizes, lengths, and head types on hand (as well as nuts and washers). It makes the work easier.
I will occasionally use a dremel to shorten a screw if I don't already have one in the necessary length. And if I need to shorten one by just a fraction, I secure the screw through a 1/8" piece of aluminum flat with a nut and file the end down with a fine file. I have several holes drilled in the flat for different screw sizes, and with one side of the holes countersunk at varying depths to accommodate the screw heads so I can produce screws of varying lengths at and around 1/8".
I'm a bit fanatic about the integrity of my screw threads, so I always thread one or two nuts on the screw before cutting/shortening it so that when the nuts are removed they clean up the threads at the end.
The guy from whom I purchased my bolt cutter in 2004 ran a small batch and sold the surplus cutters. I don't think he is in business any more.View attachment 1495293
I often drilled and tap holes in a piece of thin metal. 1/8". Insert your screw and grind off or file what you want to remove. When you remove the screw you also help to clean up the thread. Slight cleaning of the tip might be required. The harder the plate material the better especially when cutting SS screws.
I looked everywhere I could think of and found nothing.
You might try buying a set of wire crimpers with the standard screw cutter holes and then drilling and tapping a new spot for 2-56. I realize this may be easier said than done.
