Greetings all,
My latest arrival has had me smiling for a few days now, but computer probs have prevented me from posting sooner.
I have really enjoyed the process of working on a ground-up piece from Wess following my purchase last year at Blade of two of his JS test knives. The project was always going to be a Southwest bowie, and we went through a few drawings of various combinations of blade shape and guard and handle designs.
By that I mean he did all the drawings and I got to pick and choose.
Anyway, the result exceeded even the high expectation set by his previous work.
Specs:
1084 blade steel
10 7/8" blade
5 1/4" handle
2" wide
.245 thick at the ricasso
The knife is everything a good fighting bowie should be - that is big, fast and exceptionally well balanced. Fit and finish really stand out as excellent - I'm again taken back to the earlier carbon steel bowies I have from Russ Andrews that still hold my attention and admiration for their exquisite finish. The way the handle stands uniformly proud of ferrule and butt cap and the perfectly executed combination polished /satin finish of the fittings all speak to tremendous attention to detail.
And I can't say enough about the quality of the leather work. It is such a tremendous bonus to be able to get a sheath THIS good straight from the maker in a sole authorship package.
What's more, Wess is also a talented engraver - and my next piece from him will have some scratching. I highly recommend that you check out his table at Blade.
