Western Bowie and AFCK

Coupla questions. I posted a message not too long ago asking questions about BIG knives on a budget. One that was recommended to me was the Western Bowie. I like the looks of it (and the Case Bowie), and was wondering what your experiences with it have been? Is it as heavy, for instance, as the Case which I understand is a real boat anchor (in terms of weight, not quality

)? Is the steel good? Any other comments?

Also, I'd like to hear opinions on the AFCK. I have a Benchmade Eclipse, which is kind of a cheap version of the AFCK and I like it OK, but I really like the looks of the AFCK. Just incidentally, I lost the clip on the Eclipse a while back when the anchors pulled out of the handle, and Benchmade has offered to replace the knife for free. Cool, huh?

I have an old (80s) Western W 49 bowie. Mine is the carbon steel one.
Great knife. Good cutter if kept sharp....most systems work well. Has a bit of heft and chops well, too. Holds an edge.
Mine (as I said....an old one) has a really crappy sheath. I have plans to replace it.

Have an AFCK, too....nice folder but not a great one. ATS34 blade holds an edge quite well...but not exceptionally. Handle is VERY ergonomic (comfortable). Gotta declare a conflict of interest, here.....I have become a born again traditional knife person. But they have to be GOOD traditional knives

Believe me....being this old and having to live with all this experience is not the picnic I thought it was going to be.

I've got a Western W-49 bowie bought by my dad before I was born (60's)"how long have they been making these things ?" and it is a great knife. Also, I have sold many and know that the quality has not changed. I have sold a lot of the case bowie as well, but would recommend the Western.

Cool. Does the Western have a stainless blade now? I am under the impression that they do. Do you think they will hold an edge reasonably well?

Thanks,
Biff

So what is not so good about the AFCK? Are there other folders in the same price range that you find more desirable?

Thanks again,
Biff

Dang, just re-read the original post! I guess I was thinking of the original thread of big knives on a budget when I posted the following!

For big, traditionally styled bowies on a budget, I'd recommend Bob Miller. I've got one of his Confederate Bowies; 10" 440C blade, 3/16" thick, ironwood handle. He makes other bowies as well, starting at around $100!

Matt Lamey also makes awesome big knives with the best handles I've ever seen; he's got some knives posted for sale in the maker for sale forum if you hurry!

I have both the knives you mention.

For a high quality, inexpensive Bowie you can't beat the Western W49. It will do anything you want a big knife to do!

The AFCK is also a great knife. I carry mine often and it has always done what I have needed it to do. As a folding fighter, it is well balanced and quick to open. I have had only one problem with the ATS-34 blade. I broke the tip soon after I got it. I think I was more to blame than the knife.

I have not regretted either purchase and I don't think you will!

My knives are just like rabbits---they keep multiplying!!

I'm just amazed that you were able to rip the anchor points (for the clip) out of the handle of the BM 830 Eclipse!!! That's wild. BM stands by their stuff & I'm glad to hear it's being taken care of.

I think my declaration said it all.
Anyway, the AFCK is, probably, a "great knife" if you like black handles, liner locks, no bolsters and a blade that neither "talks" nor "walks".
While I haven't broken mine, the blade tip seems a bit fragile for heavy duty stuff. After all, it does have "combat" in its name

Oh, yeh....I seem to be forever polishing tiny chips out of the edge. And I don't work it hard or very nuch.

Personal stuff.
