I recently "found" a Western Bowie Knife that I had misplaced years ago (late '60s or '70s). I put it away to save it (I had carried this Western Bowie during my 3rd tour of duty in Nam).

I like the Bowies and have been using a Cold Steel (Carbon V) and a Case Bowie for years, I use them for work (read abuse in some circles) around the campsite and for some quartering work on Elk. Guess I am getting sentimental in my old age, as I am considering putting the old Western back to work again.

To do this I need some sort of a sheath to carry it as the original is in terrible condition. Anyone know where I get buy something that will work for this knife?

Can anyone tell me or give me an opinion, if this knife should be put back into service again or just put away again as it is not up to the tasks it will be used for.

Thanks

Years ago my Sensay made his pilgrimage to Japan to connect with the parent Ryu. While there he picked up a knife from a stand and cut a small thread from his hakama that was hanging loose. He was instantly admonished by a more senior instructor for using a 300 year old priceless artifact. O-sensay THE grand master, Mr Shimabauku interjected with "Its a knife, it was made to cut not to gather dust."

Thanks for the responses.

I have no problem putting this knife back to work, that was my intent, my question was mainly if this knife was of a good enough quality and could stand up to the rigors of day to day usage. I have already sharpened and cleaned her up.

thanks

Well, if it the same 10" blade Westen Bowie that I have, use that sucker :D
Unless you plan to substitute it for a crowbar, it ought to be fine. The original sheath with mine is still in good shape, but I did make a sheath for another one I used to have that came without one. Sheath was kind of ugly (like most things I make), but it worked well. It wasn't too hard to do, it just took some time and a bunch of leather, which I had a supply of back then.

I do recall seeing sheaths for western Bowie's on ebay when I was searching for older and antique Bowie's. Its been a while but I really fattened my collection from ebay.
