ARE THE BOWIES MADE BY WESTERN KNIFE CO ANY GOOD? WHERE CAN I GET ONE AND ALSO, DO THEY HAVE A WEB SITE?

THANKS,
CUT-EM-UP

You can buy a Western bowie right hre at www.1sks.com

For a website, you need to go to www.camilluscutlery.com If that is wrong, just do a search on the net for Camillus Knives, and you'll find their web site. You can aslo ask more about these knvies on the Camillus forum here, under the makers & manufacturers section.

Are they any good? Sure are. Decent steel for chopping and such, nice looks, a classic. You may get a lot of people answering in here telling you to buy something else. But as for your actual question, the Western would make a nice camp knife. I think for the money you could buy, say, a Camillus BK 9 which would outperform the Western bowie in all categories but stain resistance. but it still wouldn't be a Western! I want to have a Western bowie for my own collection some day.

Welcome to the forums! Oh, please DON'T USE CAPS, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING! ;)

I've got one, and love it. I think it's the best looking Bowie I've ever laid my eyes on. Is it any good? Don't know, I can't bring myself to use it, this one is a wall hanger for me. Western used to sell a wall mount for this knife, but I haven't seen one in over 20 years.

I think that it would be a very good camp knife also.

I have an older Coleman/Western Bowie that I customized by rounding the handle, "lowering" the clip-point, and shortening the massive hand-guard. It's now a pretty good "fighter".

The better ones are probably the older models made frome a high carbon non stainless called Chrome V, The newer models are made of a very average grade stainless. I remember filing down the guard on an older model I had and I really liked it. It looked a lot better and handled great. The stock was fairly thin 5/32", I believe. But the blade is so large it still carried some weight for chopping and the edge was ground thin enough to be a good cutter.

When Western went belly up. Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works bought a bunch of their blanks and made throwing knives for the reenactment crowd. the are very tough blades. Or were. Don't know about now.

The Western Bowie is a fantastic knife. My father and I have used them for years in the Florida wilds hacking through trees and brush and just about everything else while camping. Plenty of weight and tough as nails. One of them we Parkerized for stain resistance and it looked awesome!

Hope this helps.

Great knife, an offshoot of the older Collins & Co. # 18. The worst I can say about it is that the guard is a bit cumbersome, and gets in the way sometimes.

I personally like the older version with the C-V steel, it takes a great edge, but Camillus is a great company, that puts out a quality product. You will be pleased:).

:D:).

Dont waste your time or money on one of the new ones with the mediocre stainless blades. Go to just about any gun and knife show, and you can pick up one of the good old ones with the Chrome Vanadium blades for well under $100. Probably closer to half that actually.
