My parents have had this hatchet around for as long as I can remember. This little one is just going to get the edge filed and honed. I thought it was an interesting hatchet and am curious to find out how it takes an edge.

The handle is actually quite comfortable.

That is a really cool piece, similar to the estwings with the lines and all metal construction. Make sure you post a pic when it's cleaned up. :)

I almost forgot about this one. Yeah, I been busy.
Filed and sharpened. So glad my mom hasn't decided to take the bench grinder to the hatchets and axes like she does with her kitchen knives.

Hopefully she will stop using the hatchets as wedges now that I have talked to her about it. I removed the mushrooming on the poll, something I didn't do to my dad's boyscout hatchet.

I didn't feel the need to do much to it. I think it turned out nice and my folks can get a few more years use out of it.

Done and ready for it to go back home.

Thats a nice Western F14 Black Beauty. They were sold by the selves or with a matching hunting knife. The F14 was the heavy duty version. There was also a light duty version the F10 available. Here's a scan of an old Catalog with some good info: http://ibdennis.com/Western Black Beauty.pdf

Oh wow! Thanks for the info wildmanh. The dimensions do match the F14. I will forward that catalog to my folks. I am sure they will find it interesting. I wouldn't mind having a couple of those knives too. Thanks again.

You are quite welcome! I love old Westerns and was glad to help. :)

I am starting to take a liking to old Westerns and can't wait to find my first one. I would really like to get an F48a to go with the 'camp axe"

Those are pretty neat.
I bet those are collectors items.

I saw an F14 in used condition with about the same patina as this one but no mushrooming on the poll selling for $150. My parents use theirs and will continue to use it and eventually pass it on to me.

Aluminum?! That handle is just begging for a mirror polish, grab the fine sand paper and Flitz compound and see how it turns out. Great old hatchet.

Good luck with your search. I just checked my Westerns again, I have an F48 (older then the F48A in the add), L48A, and an H48 (older then the add) but no F48A as I said earlier. I lost my F48ABG on a campout, not the F48 and got them mixed up in my mind. :foot:

All of the 48 series knives make good companion knives. My L48A normally gets put in my grub box when ever I go car camping. It and it's siblings are some of my favorite pairing knives and small slicers. IMO an F48A, F39 and F14 would make a sweet hunting combo!!
