Just came across this little hatchet. Anybody know anything about it or interested in it? Thanks

Those are popular, especially if you have the knife/axe combo.

In reality they're a little thin and a little light.

I think they were sold with the sheath knife for a game processing combo. Case, Kinfolks, Kabar and others made them. Like Square Peg says they are too light for efficient wood chopping.

Boulder,CO is stamped under western. If someone wants it I'd gladly send it if you just cover the shipping

Check out the name Western black beauty. It was part of a knife hunter hatched combo. I have one and it holds a great edge. Baton on it. Thin enough to make feather sticks. Use it as an ulu. Chop up food for kitchen prep. Nice find.

Hey OddOgg. Having just a bit of trouble navigating this forum. If you don't mind, Message me your email address and we will get it headed your way. Thanks, Mac

I have the bigger version and as Loosearrow says yes it holds a great edge. Its been in my family for as long as I can remember and will remain that way.
Western Cutlery is quite collectable and I would love to have the knife that goes with my Black Beauty.

I guess this thread is old but, I am new so :
I also have a black beauty hatchet. I used to have full combo(by the way, the hatchet here has the handle that my knife used to have), but it got stolen when I did some work in the village at my grandparents. I left knife in the sheet on the table while doing work with the hatchet on the barn structure in the yard and many people came and went to the house. When I finished, it was nowhere to be found. Worst thing is that the combo is my trophy/memorabilia from Iraq back in 1980s.
The hatchet is perfect for precision cutting, I do not see it as being suitable for combat. The knif is too light. I think the handle is hollow. It was meant to be worn on the belt.

That's a western black beauty hatchet. Weather the model number is on the blade or the guard can give you clues about the age, as well as looking at a chart of the tang stamp variations. in the 70's they started putting a date code letters on them. but don't confuse that with letters in the model number, they started the model #'s with a letter to designate the series /handle material and could have other letters at the end , the black beauty line started with an f ( for example my my black beauty knife which I determined to be ca 1964 is a model f48a ) if it has a letter code it'll be underneath the model number.

The black beauty line really is beautiful, and it durable ( you can also sorta feel the ridges of the handle spacers which on my knife gives me a slight grip texture )
Also the black beauty line always came with a jet black sheath, otherwise it's not the original sheath ( western also used a snap with a pattern around the edge, which can determine whether or not it's even a western sheath )

Tell me about it, while it's not a western I have an imperial hatchet of my dad's and didn't get the knife because one of his brothers took it while he was in the army .

I'll bet any boy scout who had that was the cock of the walk:thumbup: ( not as user friendly as a hickory hafted hatchet as far as shock/vibration goes but definitely fancier )

Here's my favorite fixed blade
By the way when they came with knives, these combos usually had snaps on the sheaths where both could attach together.

I do know. As I posted earlier, I lost both joint sheath and a knife but someone stole it last year when I was doing some yard work.
My knife had the same handle as yours, but no indentation on the blade and its blade pointed upwards.

Yeah I believe your hatchet came with the model f39. Do you remember if your sheath hard the oak leaf pattern or not ? Cause I believe that style sheath ( as apposed to what mine has with the handle collar similar to buck sheaths ) was used much later. Also I figured you knew about the sheaths, but just wanted to make the statement for everyone else.
