Greetings to the board. New member and was glad to find this forum and hopefully an answer. Long story short. I have an original Western Knife Co large Hunter with leather (rawhide blade). This knife has stong sentimental value for me personally. The handle has dried out to the point where it is falling apart. Can it be restored? I have E-mailed Camillus and I am awaiting an answer from them as well but hoped I might get an answer here quicker. Apprciate any thoughts you folks might have and any help you can give. Gene

Welcome to the forums AZ. I don't believe Camillus will be able to restore your knife but this person can probably help you:

People that have worked with him in the past have given good reviews.

There are many talented knife makers here at BF as well. If you don't get a good response in this forum, try asking in the General Forum. Good luck!

I will look into the link you provided. Will still wait for an answer from the factory. I believe I could do the handle restoration if I could find the leather pieces... any suggestions on that front? Thanks again. AZ

for your assistance and the new link. The handle (tang ?) of the Western is split or open and the lleather pieces are in the shape of an H... did not see anything like that on the link you gave me... still holding out hope for a way to restore this momento... I believe my Dad had picked this up in the late 50s. As you know, Western was located in Boulder, CO at that time and I now live about 15 miles east of Boulder. Thanks again Blue Sky, appreciate the assist. Gene

The Western knives with the split tang design are difficult to restore because the leather "H" shaped washers are not available. I have been looking for a supplier of these washers for several years and no one that I am aware of makes these washers.
