Western knife with an interesting guard

No idea.
After enlarging the picture of the tang stamp as much as I can (same size as in your post when I click on it and open it) it looks like these might be a "878" (not sure about the first 8. It might be a "6"? or a "9"?) at the end of the third line.
I can only get the picture to about 1 inch tall, and a hair wider.

I don't see a model number, but there is a patent number corresponding to this

It's the patent for the way the handle is constructed.
 
The knife model is a 36, their large hunter pattern. The tang stamp indicates the 1935-1950 time frame for manufacture, but I've never seen a guard like that before on any Western.
