Western knives?

Looking for any info on a knife I recently acquired. It's a Western W82 (according to what I could find online). Nice feel to the handle, and about a 3" blade. Seems well made, but I don't know much about Western, and what kind of quality they are. Anyone have any info on them?

I've been looking for a smaller fixed blade to carry for camping/hiking, and this one might just do the trick if it's a decent blade.

Western produced some good blades, most of which with stacked leather handles. Treat it well and this knife will do what you want it to.

For many years, I believe that Camillus owned the Western name, and we're manufacturing Western knives.

You are welcome. When you bought it, it may have been new but around for a few years. I recently bought a 742 off the bay and it is a big folder.

Western made good knives. I still have one of their lock backs. I used to have one of their boot knives but it disappeared someplace. I actually would not mind replacing it but the pattern is only offered in other brands made offshore. Just not the same.

Hope your new Western works out well for you.

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear it's a quality knife, as I intend to actually use it. I might not abuse it (I've got bigger camp knives for that), but I'm certainly not gonna baby it either.

Doubt I'll go collecting them, but I wouldn't be adverse to finding a W84 with the 4 1/2" blade

Western made some good, solid knives. My dad owned their boot knife and a skinner like jaseman's. For my tenth birthday my dad gave me a Western large stockman. It served me well for many years as a not-so-careful kid, and is still today perfectly good albeit a little worn from sharpening. I still occasionally drop it in my jeans pocket and put it to use.

Western was some excellent stuff, I absolutely love my f48a even though it's pretty worn out ( it was heavily sharpened when I got it as a kid and I've used the heck out of it since then )

The only Western I have is a 658 folder that I acquired from my father. It is the only knife I have of his that he actually used. And handed to me many times when cleaning fish and such. I didn't really appreciate it as much until he was gone. Now it sits front and center on one of my knife shelves.

The OP's knife was made in 1985 (indicated by the J in a circle), the first full year of Coleman ownership. Coleman had bought Western in 1984. The earliest date code on a W82 that I have seen is "G", 1983. Camillus made versions don't have date codes.
