Taking a trip the second week of July out near Hagerstown/Frederick, MD and Harpers Ferry VA. I would like to make it to some impressive peaks, see some of the views they have in the Maryland dept of Tourism brochures.

Unfortunately, I is fat, with bad knees:foot:. I have the stamina, but I am afraid my knees might be jelly when I make it back down, and I have an hour and a half trip ahead of me.

Any "accessible" spots I can get to easily? Long distance isn't really an issue, just excessive uphill hiking. I live about two hours away from Harpers Ferry and Hagerstown, a good hour and a half in good traffic from home to Frederick. This hike will be around mid morning to mid day, maybe 9am to 12pm.

Silent? Go a little farther and go to Dolly Sods.

It is the highest plateau east of the MS and the northern section has great views and moderate steepness.

I like http://www.hikingupward.com/ for Northern VA and eastern WV hikes. They've got a snazzy flash map with a ton of good hikes on it. A few are probably in your target area. They rate them all by difficulty and they also show an elevation map to give you an idea of how harsh the climb and descent will be.

Have fun on your trip bro! Ive never been to that part of the country. Ill bet its nice...

Try the website for Mid Atantic Hikes. It's a nice hiking and backpacking group in Maryland. I think their website describes many really nice trecks.

Have fun!
