Western used letter codes as a tang stamp for a short while. "A" started it in 1978 I believe, "B" was 1979, and so on. I don't know how long it went for, but the last letter I've seen was "F" for 1983. As far as pre-Camillus, I can't say. The Camillus website says they bought Western in 1991, but they could have been making them before that.
