Hello,

I´d like to know more about good quality western swords.

Anyone have or tested one of these swords below:

Del Tin
Albion Armour
Skofnung (1060 carbon steel modified - I found them very beautiful)
Generation 2 (also carbon steel)
Deepeeka

All are functional? Which are better and why? I forgot other good marks?

Thanks...

I can comment on some Albion and Angus Trim blades. Both offer first class FULLY functional swords. The Albion line is geared to authenticity and function - and are priced as such. Their new line of forged blades looks really good. The Angus Trim line is geared more towards performance although they follow historical typology remarkably well. I can recommend both vendors without reservations - their swords will do everything the orginals could do and more. The Del Tin line has been the industry standard for many years. Their swords are historical in appearance but are less performance oriented than say the Albion or Angus Trim lines. Take a look over at Swordforums to learn more.

My current opinion of said swords is:

Del Tin - All the ones I've seen are reasonably decently constructed although some are a bit heavy and some are not balanced all that well.

Albion - haven't seen anything but pictures but they look really really nice. Of course for the price you could go custom.

Skofnung - frankly they look terrible to me, but I'm more interested in historical reproductions so to each their own I guess.

Deepeeka - From what I hear you get what you pay for but I've never seen one.

Just to stir the pot a little check out www.armor.com.

Here ae a couple of swordmakers in the Czech Republic. I have just received the Roman Riding Sword from Patrick Barta at TEMPL and amy extremely pleased with it. It is superbly made and very, very reasonably priced, coming with a scabbard. I have never actually seen anything from Lutel, although I have heard very good things about them. Mostly that their swords are as well made as Del Tin's and a good bit lighter and handier. Take a look and see what you think. I am constantly drooling over the Spatha, a reproduction of he sword found at Vendel in Sweden that Patrick has for a mere $3200.

My recommendation depends largely on what type of sword you're looking for.
"Western Sword" is a bit too wide a catagory.

What exactly were you considering?

Well,

I really prefer the japanese ones (like I practice Iai do), and I think I know a little about this kind of swords, but referring to the western I like almost all kind swords that I already saw (but this one I know much little about), I tend to prefer the Gladius, the viking models, the rapier (also italian and french) and I also found the Angus Trim mercenary very beautifull (or the ones like that) .

I am not intending to use it by now (but here we have plans of maybe, in some time, starting a sort of dueling club, with some friends that now are only trainning kendo, iai-do and fencing), in this moment I only want to know about it and maybe acquiring some pieces.

;) :D
