Just a quickie, do you guys in the USA get a 10% accounting fee when you do WU money orders? For people in the know, what's the deal with paypal vs WU?

Does paypal charge big %'s as well? Reason I ask is I went to pay a fellow infihog with WU, total of about 400 usd, but WU wants me to add another 40 usd for them shifting some 1's and 0's around. Now, I've never used WU before, and I'm not entirely used to the idea of shelling out what is basically a functional kydex sheath in order to pay someone. Paypal has never done that to me.

F Western Union I say. Whoops

That smiley is not acceptable here...you may want to edit it out before a Mod sees it.

As for WU, I'm assuming that we're talking intl. money order fees here, yes? 10% does seem a bit steep. PayPal charges 3% (+/-), but also may charge 2.5% for currency conversion and $1 for cross-border fees also. Still less than the alternative, I guess. :)

WU is safer for the seller, Paypal can be jerked back out of your account:thumbdn:

That's exactly the case. The only way for the seller to be safe and have seller's protection through PayPal is to receive payment from "Confirmed" PayPal. Unfortunately, Confirmed status is only available to US (and some Canadian and UK) residents that verify their address with PayPal.

I thought that I have read on the GBU forum that there is a lot of fraud around WU money orders, and advice that sellers not accept it.

How can the seller get hurt if they have already received the cash for WU prior to the shipment? Does WU have some right to come after the funds from the seller after the fact? If WU is not safe then the only option would be for the buyer to somehow get a major US bank Money Order and mail it to the seller?

if you receive a fraudulent western union money order it is the equivalent of a bad check where the account has already been canceled. not unlike counterfeit money, nothing you can do if the guy's return address is fake. I'm not sure if this is the case, but it seems logical that a western union money transfer would be retracted should it have come from a fraudulent account. BofA reserves the right to modify posted transactions even after the cleared statements shows up on your account, as my brother has found out several times when his accounts have incurred overdrafts even though all of his receipts claimed otherwise.

paypal works both ways, you can have your money removed from your account (and your bank account if that's what it's attached to), and you can also have your money returned if a seller is jerking you around. very few financial institutions are free from legitimate customer and seller complains and problems.
