I have been looking at the Western W-49 Bowie knives, and had thoughts of buying one. Can anyone tell me what to look out for year of manufacture wise. Also the letter stamp on the tang, does this denote year of manufacture and how does that translate.

Rusty1, the letter is for the year A is 1977, B is 1978 ect. The ones prior to 1977 have markings on the blade or handguard. The ones with small rivets in the handle are the oldest. I have the 1980 and 1986 catalogs and a booklet from 1975 on cd. Just send me your snail mail address to my hotmail account. doobeau@hotmail.com and I will get one to you all for free. I just want to share the Western knives history. Edbeau

Thanks for your info on the dating Edbeau, your offer on the CD is most appreciated, I have seen the CD and the images are first class the information and pictures of the knives really shows them well, also the booklet which shows views and history is a joy to see, Including images from the manufacturing plant, if anyone is interested in the History of Western knives should take Edbeau up on his offer.

Great info. I have an 84 that has made many miles through the East Texas woods with me when I was a kid. My father bought it new for me in 85 in San Antonio.
