Western

I recently inherited a knife from my grandpa that i know relatively nothing about. From the little research i did, I found out that it was a Western g-46-8 I'm pretty sure. I am just curious as to when this knife was made, would have been carried, is it military issued, current worth, etc... My grandpa was in the Air Force in the 50's. Could it possibly be what he carried, or maybe someone before him?
It says on the blade:

Looks extremely close to the one in the link below except for the knots on the handle...
