I have the 701, 702 and 703 knives in my collection but bought another 703 because it came in a very nice wooden box, and was in mint condition. In comparing it to my other 703 I noticed the blade is shorter. In measurement, it is 3/8 ths of an inch shorter. The longer knife has an earlier serial number than the shorter one. The sorter one shows no signs of being reground. Does anyone know why this might be?

Wouldn't be the first time there was a minor variation between samples of the same model from a manufacturer. I've had plenty with slight differences (e.g. there is probably 1/4" difference in blade length between my shortest ZT 0452 and my longest one, and across three of them no two are exactly the same length).

What are the 2 blade lengths and the 2 serial numbers?

The Westmark line came out in 1970 and was still going strong in the 1986 catalog. Disappears from the 1991 catlalog.

The 701 was advertised as having a 4-1/2" blade throughout its advertising period. 3/8" is a fairly large deviation. Comparing the two, could it be that the shorter one had a tip broken/reprofiled?

The 701, 702, and 703 are the only three Westmark models produced by Western or Western-Coleman. Any other model was made for Smokey Mountain Knife Works way down the road.

These are model 703.
Serial number 03451 is 4 1/2 inches long.
Serial number 16523 is 4 5/16 inches long. I was incorrect stating the difference in my original post. (old eyes). It has definitely not been reprofiled in my estimation. BTW in addition to the three models, I also have three of the Colman commemoratives with the antler handles and in the display case.
