Wet cord wrap & carbon steel?

I am looking to cord-wrap a Becker Necker, which is made from epoxy-coated non-stainless steel. Can I expect the tang to rust if I wrap the cord when wet? If so, is there anything I can treat the tang with?

Thanks!

I don't think you gain much by wetting the cord, unless perhaps it's cotton cord. I see what you're trying to do - wrap wet, shrink tight - but I doubt it'll really work. Just keep the cord tight as possible while wrapping.

I think the greater problem with wrapping the Becker Necker is the tendency of the cord to slip off the rounded butt profile. I used a couple dabs of crazy glue to defeat that problem.

Hope this helps!

You can expect the coating to protect it quite well!
No rust.
THough I cant see a lot of advantage to cord wrapping wet if youre using synthetic fiber.

Thanks!
Yeah, I am somewhat sceptical about synthetic cord shrinking myself, but I have read that it does, several places. Beats me -- I might and might not try. :)

If, by synthetic cord, you mean nylon paracord, I can attest to the fact that it stretches when wet. I've used it to guy out my tarps for years, and it always losens in the rain. Even when stretched between two trees for a ridgeline, when the exposed portion gets rained on, the line develops slack. I'm going to assume it tightens back up when it dries out. -- Bear

IMO that's a big assumption. I'd run a test on that theory before ruining a long piece of nylon para-cord.

Wrapped my Necker with wet paracord and it's definitely tighter than I could have gotten it otherwise. No rust on handle after it dried.
