Hi all,

Yesterday it started raining in my area of the world. We have not had rain for some time. It has a been a pretty dry fall for us here. The rain we got was just a steady stream of rain. This morning when I got up and looked out side it was not raining at the time. Kathy and I decided to take a hike down near the river that flows by our little town.

Just some back ground about this place where I hike and have fires and just play in the woods. Several years back the township decided to spend some money on a hiking / walking trail over a old rail road trail. They took out the old rails and put down some small white rocks and built a nice wooded path over the rail road bridge. This area where the rail road used to travel through is a area roughly 1/2 wide by maybe 3/4 of a long. There are trees on both sides of the path and then on both sides of the river. Most people come to the Dam to fish and then walk on the trail. This trail is a half circle type of thing. meaning once you start out at the dam and cross over the bridge that was built over the old rail rode bridge it will take you to a road. at the road you either stop and turn around and come back or start walking on the road back into town. Here is a pic of the dam and the parking lot. I took this pic as Kathy and I were comming back from our hike and little fire that we had.

Here is a pic of the Dam and me just before we crossed over the bridge.

Today I carried my Noatak gearslinger pack.

I took this pic of Kathy and Kelly Girl as they were walking in front of me.

Once across the bridge you can stay on the trial or turn to the right or the left and then follow the river up or down or you can head into the timber that is there. some spots you can be in a area of timber that is 300 or so yards by 500 or so yards.
this is on both sides of the river depending on where you are at along the river.

About 8 years back I was walking though one of these areas and found spot that I thought would be a good place to have a little fire pit area.

IMG_1209.jpg

I have a few bricks that I found by the old rail road tracks and a little bridge that was being worked and back then and a few bricks broke and were tossed off to the side and well I picked them up and carried them about 200 yards to my little fire pit area. I also have peace of black plastic and under that plastic I have a old tin can hobo stove and some wood that I keep there for when I come to that spot I can quickly get a fire going and then while I am there I work on cutting up some more wood to replace what I used.

Kathy took this pic of me getting fuzz sticks made and splitting some sawed logs that I sawed with my hand saw.

IMG_1210.jpg

When we got there to the fire pit area it was not to chilly, but it was soaking wet on the ground and the surrounding area so I pulled out my poncho and put that down and then sat on my coat. temps were in the 40s and I had 2 shirts on so it was not to bad to split some wood with my knife and with the help of a batton I split some rounds and then shaved them up into t some fuzz sticks. I also had 2 fat wood sticks and made some fuzz sticks up with them.

Once I had the fuzz sticks carved up and then the all the split sticks I wanted I put them together in a tipi.

IMG_1211.jpg

Then I reached into my pocket and got my fire starting device ( Bic Lighter) and lit my shaving and fuzz sticks, which in turn lit the split sticks and bigger kindling.

IMG_1212.jpg

After the fire was going I decided to start getting my wood that I have over time cut and brought to my fire pit area. I laid a log of about 3" thick or so on my leg / foot area and carefully started to saw a peice of wood off.

IMG_1217.jpg

Once I had that peice sawed off I took orange handled Kephart knife and with my batton I spilt it up.

To be continued.

Hi all, continuing on:D

After I worked my way around that round peice of log, I split the center.

IMG_1220.jpg
.

I love to sit by my fire and saw off a log then spilt it up and then feed it to the fire. After I had sawed off and split up a couple of logs, I decided it was time to have some hot coco and just relax a bit by the fire.

It is pretty cool when Kathy comes along then she can take some pic for me lol.

Here is pic of Kathy just sitting down by me when I took this pic.

IMG_1221.jpg

Since the logs that she sits on when we are there were wet she took a plastic bag from here pack and put it down on the logs and kept here tush from getting wet:thumbup:..

Well it was a pretty good few hours to be out today, even thought it was a little wet and all.

Take care all,

Bryan

Bryan, Next time I get caught in the rain, I will remember these pictures & realize it's not as bad as it seems . . :)
What species of fish are in the river ?
Be safe.

Great post, Bryan!:thumbup::thumbup:
I love days like that. Another former soldier friend and I pick days when the weather sucks to meet for coffee. We slog out to a decent spot, set a tarp if necessary, build a small fire and make coffee in the rain or drizzle. It keeps you on your toes as far as all the little things you learn to do to stay dry and keep your stuff dry. I spent three years in the Pacific Northwest (Fort Lewis), and a LOT of that time outside. Most of that time was spent keeping dry.:)

Another benefit of less than perfect weather is that no one else is out.:thumbup:

Thanks for the post and photos. I enjoy a hike in a light rain, it just seems peacefull to me.

thanks for posting the pics, looks like you had fun :)

some of my memorable hikes were in less than ideal conditions (of course a few of those I'd like to forget too :D)- as you demonstrate, if properly prepared we can enjoy the woods in any weather

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind comments. I tell ya. I older I get the more
I really like the fair weather type of hikes / walks lol. But there
is something neat about a little play time in damp weather. One
thing is that you can really walk as quietly through the woods.
The smell of rain is pretty cool.
You can ... (well I really appreciate knowing that for the most
part unless something were to happen that after my walk and
all I will ge going home to a nice warm house and clean dry
clothes lol( see just how some gear works and some does not
.ie leather gloves when wet feel like wet bacon.

I will say this too. That with the air being damp and with most of the
wood I touched was damp or just down right wet on the out side.
Getting my fire started and lit and just plain all of it took longer than
when every thing is dry. even though I used fat wood for the tinder
( maked fuzz sticks) it lit easy enough but the other kindling and
split wood really was just a little damp because of the atomsephere.

When Kathy and I started our walk it was not raining at all. but as
the day went on it start to drizzle and then just plain out started
( we home by then) a hard rain and then turned to snowing.

William M. Thanks. Well we try to make it look fun lol and it was,
but I know I do not want to do that very offten lol.

JUST1MOR, Great, I hope it helps if you get caught in the rain
some time. As to the fish, the river has catfish, bullhead, carp,
Drum, Gar, some sun fish and many turtles lol.

Jeff H. Thanks, Great story you shared about meeting for coffe
and yes learning what it takes to help stay dry:D Very True what
you said about most do not like to be out in it. So We had the woods
to ourselves lol.

JK, Thank you, Yea what you said is so true it really is a peaceful time.

mtwarden, Thanks, Yea it was fun for a few hours lol.
With your job I bet there are some times out that just plain
stink for ya. I am glad that you do what you do though.
Yep with the right gear playing out in the rain can be done, but boy
even with that gear it can be a challange lol.

Take care all,

Bryan

KuRUpTD, Thanks. You know in the 8 years since I guess
you could say I found that little spot and put in a little fire pit.

I have only had it disturbed by others a couple of times,
Once somebody used my precut firewood and had fire and then
did not replace what they used. The stinkers lol. That is
one reason I only have a just a little cut up wood there under
a piece of rotton looking plastic. I use some and then while there
saw up and split what I sawed up.

The other time it was a little fur bearing critter lol. Dam Packrats.
I had a gal. sized plastic bag with some different natural tinders.
Ie. cattail, thistle, and milkweed and some cotton with PJ mixed in.
There were chew holes all round that gal. bag lol and my tinder was
scattered around some. He or she even left behind some
droppings behind :eek.

Bryan.

Hi John, Thanks, It was a fun time out. Yea the Kephart is a awesome woods knife.
I know why Horace Kephart chose that design for his woods knife.

Take care,

Bryan

Cool stuff Bryan. I think it is neat that you have your little spot like that on public land. I also think it is neat that you leave a little bit of a gear - hobo stove cache. While some stinkers may have used up your wood without replacing, maybe, just maybe it was somebody facing conditions like you and Kathy were but was foolish enough to not bring a knife. Maybe that person found your little spot, hobo stove and wood and made himself a little fire and wished a good wish in your direction. The good news seems that the person was good enough to replace your hobostove under the plastic and not do a stupid vandalism act to your firepit like adolescents are often apt to do. Also, how many people might have used your spot, took comfort from it, and left it as it was with fuel replenished?

I think we sometimes underestimate the good parts of humanity and that many times the folks who might find our magical little areas have as much appreciation for nature and bushcraft as we do. Of course there are idiots in the world too, but I like to think that the numbers of idiots aren't as high as we sometimes imagine.

Usually you bring that antler Kephart out with you, good to see you are cranking out other kepharts in different materials as well. It is a good design and I like your handle shape on the one in your pictures. Kind of like my peacemaker handle but with a bit more guard to it needed for the 'classic' kephart style.

sure reminds me of the time i spent in oregon. everything is wet but it seldom freezes in the area around portland. great pics bryan we could stand some of that wet in tex.corn cooked with the husks on make a chilly day warm.

Hi all,

Revolverman 357, Thanks, it was fun to be out with my Girls lol. Normally Kelly Girl is the only one that goes with me, but hear lately Kathy has been going with me on my walks to our spot to have a fire and coco as well besides
Kelly girl. I think Kelly Girl loves being in the woods as much as I do.

Ken, Thank you. What you said is neat to think about. There are others out there roaming that land too. Maybe someday I will meet one of them and share a fire whether they start it or I do.

Yea, I left the elk antler kephart in my Expedition and just carried and used my EDC Orange handled Kephart that day. Even though it has a 4.5" long blade and is only 3/32" thick it really handles the wood cutting chores pretty good. I love the handle shape and feel of the peacemaker and the Kephart.

Dennis, Thanks. I will see if I can talk the weather man into sending some rain your way :D.

Bryan

Back when I wore BDUs every day and operated leather personnel carriers (admittedly a long time ago), we used to say there is nothing worse than 33 degrees and raining.

Thanks for the post Bryan. Always enjoy you out door post. That Kephart
is a cool looking knife to use .
By the way the daughter tried the beef bacon ,but was not her favorite.:D
I miss your cooking post.

Hi all,

nemoaz, Yea, fall rains can really be yucky lol.

Pitdog, thanks, Kelly Girl will 8 years old next month.

Hawkeye5, Thanks man. LOL well beef bacon is not for every ones tastes I guess lol. The place that I get mine in Diller, Ne. Is the best that I have ever had so far.
I am planning on doing some more cooking post too. I do not think like I did last year.

I am really excited and concentraiting on getting
my shop here into town. I have the place now and will start to get stuff moved in and set up. That will take from my getting outside and walking in the woods time though.

Anyways Thanks all and take care,

Bryan
