I just got a new knife and the sheath is a tad loose. Whats the best way to wet form the sheath, to make a better fit? Thanks.

Most of us don't lurk around here in the middle of the night. This sub forum tends to run at a quite leisurely pace so patience is a key. :)

First, you don't have a description of the sheath type, that will help us to tell you the best way to tighten it up.

Assuming its a pouch type sheath you can wet it under the tap with hot water, hot as you can stand it, till its pliable not floppy. If the leather is thin it wont take long to happen so be watchful.

Next take a smooth instrument, something like the rounded end of a sharpie pen and smooth the leather around the knife following the lines of the handle. Immediately remove the knife and wipe it down. You may have to re mold the sheath a few times as it AIR drys.

Depending on your climate it may take over night or longer for the sheath to dry. Do NOT use heat to dry your leather, don't use a microwave or hair dryer. If you must use artificial means to dry it take a small fan or fan forced heater on LOW and move the sheath occasionally for even drying.

Thanks Leatherman! The shaeth is a JRE pouch type that I got with a Bling Horse Knife. So do not leave the knife in the sheath to dry, but leave it in while Im molding it? Also, I have a few sheaths that were wet formed from the makers and there nice and hard. Will wet forming do this, or is there something else like soaking it in wax that makes it hard? Thanks, and yes patience is something I need to work on just ask my wife! :)

Your very welcome! :)

Yes, just for the wet forming, do not leave the knife in the wet sheath any longer than you have to. Its essential that you have the knife in the sheath while wet forming, no other way to get it the right shape without it. ;)

Wet forming will harden the sheath, not a whole lot, but it will be a stiffer sheath after the work. Since I don't subscribe in the hot wax treatment, I'm not the best one to ask about that. I stop at wet formed, and a good treatment/sealer, ie Leather Balm with Atom Wax or Tan Kote.

Patience is a difficult subject, I agree totally. :D

Dwayne's the man:thumbup: And his method to mold a sheath is the best I've tried.

One thing I'll mention...if its still not tight enough for you After wet molding, wet it well again with hot water and don't put the knife back in this time untill after air drying. I've had to do this with a few to get a tighter fit.
