Wet Weather Firestarting !

Today was a typical wet west coast day, it had been raining all day and will likely carry on till tomorrow !

I figured it would be a good time to try another wet weather fire starter.

I had attached some premium BC fatwood to a wind/waterproof match with a section of ranger band:

I propped the match up against a pine cone, took a pic and then fumbled in my pocket for my matchsafe to get the striker out....I did this deliberately to allow the match to get wet for a few minutes to simulate a less than perfect scenario in a survival situation.
I then lit the match, held it upside down in my hand till I was sure the fatwood and band had lit and then propped it back against the pinecone:

Total time till burn out...3 minutes dead ! You can see that the match had fallen and not all the band had burned, however 3 minutes would likely give ya time enough to set your tinder over the top and is certainly longer than the match alone would last !

Verdict: Not very impressive when compared to commercial ' giant matches ' with the strikable heads, I have used those and they burn for around 8 minutes even in heavy rain !

Maisy looked quite worried by the whole thing !!!!:D

Neat stuff as usual, ever use jute twine for tinder? Have been watching Ray Mears videos,he seems quite good at starting fires.

Yeah I sometimes use Jute but find it's only really any good when it's dry (not yet tried waxed jute), however if it's dry I find I only need fatwood or cedar bark anyway !

As with anything, you should always use what you have the most success with be it PJB's, Jute or whatever else !;)

This is actually me a few weeks ago showing my buddy how to light some jute and fatwood with a ferro rod !
