hey all i have a wetterlings 19in axe i realy like it but iam thinking about up gradeing to a grandfors is there a niticable diffrence in edge retention ? also where is a good place to get a grandfors brunks ?

i have axes of both brands but i had not used these enough to know if one hold it's edge better than the other. But i know i like better the GB the fit & finish is perfect & mine GB SFA cut better than my Wetterlings LHA because the edge profile is thinner & the cutting edge is longer too.

I really recommend to upgrade,Gränsfors Bruks is not expensive compared to a quality knife

Wetterlings is great too but not as great as Gränsfors Bruks!

Lee Valley Tools is a really good place to buy GB Axes
Really Professionnal,good prices,fast shipping & well packaged.

I have had both - GBs are way superior in fit, finish & edge geometry in my experience. If you have a belt grinder to re-shape the edge a Wetterlings is a very good value, otherwise spend for the GB.

thanks guys i just re-shaped the edge to be like a grandfors i will use it and see how long the edge holds then i will see about getting a grandfors thanks again

I have both and prefer the current wetterlings for a couple of reasons:

Quality
Wetterlings went through a rough patch in terms of quality of fit and finish a while back, but every new one I've seen in the last 18 months or so have been beautifully done. Remember, the guy who owns GB bought Wetterlings a while back and personally said he'd get the quality control stuff resolved. He has.

Wetterlings isn't as finely finished as GB, but about about of week of using an axe for the purposes it was designed for, they'll look the same anyway :)

Value
At current prices, Wetterlings is just a superior value. I mean, for about $50 bucks you get a LOT of axe. GBs are beautiful -- I bought my two GBs before the big price run up -- but they're insanely over priced now.

You can't go wrong with either -- they're just great. However, you'll pay a lot more not to go wrong with a GB :)

$110-$120-$130

it's not expensive for a tool that will last a lifetime.

i dont know for you but for me $50 mean nothing if i dont spent it on a quality tool. i'll waste it in many little useless buying.

just my 2 cents

one thing I just noticed when I got my last GB this week was that a Wetterlings I got last year and used for one camping trip has shrunk so much that almost nothing of the handle is holding on any more. I have not touched it since around July, and it is the only axe I have that has ever done this- including a Wetterlings hatchet that I bought at the same time and used on the same trip- not impressed!

I used my wetterlings LHA again today and i must say that my Gränsfors Bruks SFA is far superior in every aspect.

I have a wildlife haychet in both and the GB came alot sharper and better finish overall, but i like the feel of the Wetterling in my hand better. I have rather huge hands and Gf came out with a new shape handle 6or 10 years ago, to me they seem a little to straight and don't have a very big nob on the endand may go flying through the air. As Dogwood stated: Wetterling's quality has come way up in the last 18 months. I have two of their products (25" and 12") which took very little work to get the edge profiling right and a razor edge on them. The handles and wood of mine are properly fitted. I added a small tapered wedge to my 25" for added security since there was plenty of wood left in the eye. As I do with all my axes--always lacquer seal the end grain to prevent the escape of moisture and loosening of the handle.

The thinner profile of the GB is superior for cutting, but the slightly thicker profile of the Wetterling is superior for all-round use of cutting and campfire splitting. For heavy duty use in cold weather the thicker profile of the Wetterling will make it less prone to break should it bind or be twisted in wood.
