My dad's wetterlings hatchet is at least 30 years old, probably quite a bit older. It has a blue head, I believe that is original and stamped drop forged. What's the story on this? Cheaper model, good tool, no longer made, what?

I have a picture but I don't know how to add it.

Not sure how to interpret colours on Swedish axe heads. The 1960s 2 1/4 lb Sandvik that I have is orange but I have seen a couple of larger versions (3 lb?) that are blue. At the time my dad (with me in tow) bought the brand new Sandvik I don't recall there being colour choices for same size axes on the rack at the Beaver Lumber hardware store.

Is it like this one? Mine also had some bright blue color left on it when I got it, and there's still some left back on the poll (just outside of this picture).

I don't know much about their history, but I can tell you mine has been a great working tool, despite having the bit slightly off center. The edge is nice and thin, but it still has American style hollows instead of the European flat style cheeks, and the edge is reasonably hard (maybe around 55-56 Rc).

The company owner has videos on -line that explain the re-invention and history of the company. Your hatchet comes from a time when they were grinding and painting their products. Sharpen it up and let us know how it works.
