 Just out of curriosity why are the hand forged wetterling axes better than their dropped forged axes?
Are the hand forged really better?
Wouldn't the dropped forged axes be more consistant in their grain stucture and therefore better?
I never see anything about the dropped forged products. Is that because they are not imported or just not concidered a good product and worth discussing?
I would think they would be cheaper but still of good quality. So I am asking you, the experts. Whats up with that?
They make a nice looking mini drop forged hatchet but I have never heard any on mention it.

Grain structure of the two should be equivalent as the grain structure is determined by heat treat after forging.

Thanks I didn't know that. Until now the only reference to grian stucture in matals I have been familiar with is in rifle barrels.
Every thing I had read on that subject was that the forging or cutting of the lands and grooves distorted the grain structure and because of this uneven grain structure the point of inpact could change due minute warping of the barrel when it heated. That is supposed to be the advantage to cryo treating barrels. It realigns the grain and minimises the warping. Not a big problem for your average shooter but a big plus to the precision match or varmit shooter.

Hand forged tools have that extra appeal of being made by hand from a skilled craftsman.

Bragging rights are fine. I have a GB mini, wildlife, hunters axe and a wetterlings mini, plus an old craftman mini which was probably made by vaughn.
So far I'm not terribly impressed buy any of the minis. They seem best suited for carry in a day pack and used in emergncies but not the best choice for daily use. They cut Ok but defintely take more time and energy. Both of which can be in short supply at times. If I were going into the field for a longer period of time the wildlife or the hunters axe would be going along.
But the mini dropped forged wetterlings has on their web site caught my eye and I was wondering why it is never mentioned. thought It might be comparable to the sub zero or bark river.

Your information about rifle barrels is not correct either !! Poorly machined [inside or out ] rifle barrels have stresses from the machining which will change POI as it heats up.Ideally ou would start with a piece of stress relieved steel , machine it , and stress relieve it again. Many have tested cryo'ed barrels and found no benefit.
