wetterlings hunters axe

I own their smallest and love it! It even came out of the sheath hair shaving sharp! All this for under $30 including shipping!

Wetterlings are excellent axes! They are made in Sweden right down the street from Gransfors. Both companies use the same steel and American Hickory handles.

Wetterlings are sometimes hard to come by because of their demand.

Mine is the 19" Hunters axe and it's a good one. Being more a utility tool, not as pretty as the GB, but a heck of a user.

I have both a GB SFA, and a Wetterlings Hunter. GB has better fit and finish, but the Wetterlings works JUST as well.

I love them both.

I really like mine, absolutely the best axe you can get for the money. If you do some searching I think you can get a better deal, especially on the S&H.

Thank you for this thread...I was gonna buy a Granfors...wheeehw! that was a close one.

Mine seem to hold up just fine -- AND they have a better profile than the small GB's for splitting hardwood.

Agreed. The wedge is thicker. It splits hardwood rather than getting stuck. My GB is a good splitter, but tends to bind up in harder wood.

Have the same 19" Wetterlings mentioned above; not as pretty as a GB (at first - I find GBs rust like hell out here) but I find it a better cutter. Less "sticky" more "throwy." As in throwing chips, not throwing the axe.

I love my Wetterlings to death. BUT! Here is what I have done:

1) Sharpen it. They don't arrive sharp. They arrive like a normal hardware store axe. I can shave with mine. In fact I have pics of me, shaving my face with it, just for fun.

2) Sand the laquer off the handle, and oil it instead. Better for long-term use, doesn't blister the hand. Also gives a good sticky grip.

3) Chucked out the stock sheath and slapped together a homemade one. The leather the original was made out of was junk, and I tore it a couple of times. Wetterlings sent me a new one for free and told me they were looking for a new sheath supplier - that was a couple of years ago. Maybe the current sheaths are better, I don't know.

Anyway an afternoon spent mucking around with the axe and you will have a superior tool, IMO.

cool, thanks for all the input

does anyone have a cheaper source for these, looking for one w/ the 19 inch handle...ebay is $30 plus $13 bucks S&H

I have the small and a large hunters axes and like them both. I carry the smaller axe much more often and like others here use it to split wood much more then to chop wood. I prefer to saw to length and then split when needed. The large hunter has a so so helve grain wide but the small hunter has an excellent helve. I agree that sanding off the varnish and then oiling the helve makes a good tool even better. Both axes came shaving sharp so I guess I got lucky there. The Wetterlings sheath is a joke, you can do much better.
