Got a Wetterlings Small Hunting Axe in the mail today. I am pretty happy with it overall. I've used other axes and this one feels really good in the hand. My only concern is that the I know the poll is supposed to be polished but this one is not. It's not something that I even though about at first until I really started giving it a hard once over. Is this a huge issue? My thoughts are that since I won't be skinning with it it, and driving the occasional peg or what not shouldn't hurt it, I shouldn't worry about it. Plus I kind of like the unpolished look. (i'll always know it's mine.;) )Am I wrong on this?

Are you into function or fashion?

If fashion then you might want to be concerned it doesn't quite measure up to your esthetical expectations. If into function, then you just bought yourself a mighty fine ax my friend - one of which many others would gladly take in a heartbeat. I know some folks who want one and cannot afford to own one. And I know they're difficult at times to buy because the demand exceeds the production and delivery capacity.

Use it, enjoy it, work it, clean it, care for it - don't sweat the small stuff. It just a tool.

You guys are right. Thanks for the feedback. That's why I love this place. I second guess stuff too much sometimes. Drive's the Mrs. crazy. ;) I'm gonna grab that quote as my signature if you don't mind Quirt. It'll keep me from getting hung up on insignificant details.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the Wetterlings hunting axes have polished polls like the Gransfors does. I've never read a description that says they are polished.

Pet the sweaty, don't sweat the petty. ;)

After reading this thread........I bought the wilderness axe................

WHY? WHY? WHY? do read these threads...Im so weak :)

polishrd, unpolished, BFD!

i don't see ti making a difference for most axe chore... even if you were usuing it for skinning or quartering game, an unpolished poll should be almost as easy to wipe clean as a polished one. puncturing the guts and ecoli contamination would be a greater concern than some random dirt from the forest floor that might have been stuck to the poll of your axe and cotten dialoged in the butchering process.

your ancestors never worried about polished polls back a few generations or further. keeping the edge keen, not breaking the haft, etc. were bigger concerns. and finding game and keeping the powder dry or having enough food to get thru winter were far greater concerns than that. because if they broke a handle they knew how to replace it and if the edge was dull they knew how to sharpen it.

evidently they survived.

Obviously a polished poll wasn't a priority...hence the not noticing. I wouldn't sweat it.
