I've been looking for an easily portable hand axe for small limbing tasks, making kindling, carving and that is light enough for backcountry carry in a pack or on a belt. Finally settled on a Wetterlings Wilderness Hatchet (#106) - not too short, and with just enough weight for the work I need it to do.
Handle is very comfortable, with good control and works well when choked up.
It came reasonably sharp, but a little time with a stone and a strop and its good to go.
Quite pleased with the grain and the head alignment:
Also pleasantly surprised with how well it performs splitting kindling, given that it doesn't have a lot of weight behind it:
Fits very nicely on the side of my daypack:
And on my belt holster:
LOA: 13"
Head Wt: 1.2 lbs
Total weight: 1.8 lbs
All in all, I'm really happy with this little performer.
