What are the automatic fishing reels called? I think I've read that they're illegal in some areas. What is the deal with them? Seems like they have viable applications. Someone educate me?

Are you talking about yo-yo's? Not illegal here in GA. I personelly do not care for them. Waset of money to me. Rather use a green limb and a bush hook (set line, limb line).

Not sure what they're called. From my understanding they automatically pull the line up when the bait is taken.

I dont think they would be any more effective than just running limb lines. At reelfoot lake they are popular. They will reel a small fish completely out of the water and leave it hanging there.

Yea those are yo-yo's. Honestely dipbait is right. I have tried them and actually find a god limb line more effective. I have seen big catfish destroy yo yos,

Thanks for all the info. Cool contraption but ultimately doesn't seem worthwhile.

They work and are easy to use, legal in some states, not in others. You tie a knot or crimp a bead on the line to keep them from yanking small fish out of the water, but use the right sized hook in the first place and you can lessen the bait stealers. Here, you are limited to a certain number per person, and need to tag them with your name. They have to be checked every so often. Set for catfish, they are great. Usually hung from a limb so they do have some spring. The reel just mainly sets the hook on normal sized cats. I don't use them routinely, but have used them on overnighters.

They can also be used with a snaring system for small game. I've got a couple myself I've yet to play with, but I've got a close friend who's captured more than a few varmints with them. They work well, I've seen the pics.

I know a few guys who swear by them they use them on "survival hikes" they are illegal here I think but what they don`t know ......
