Has RAT offered a big chopper in the past or are there plans for one in the future? A RAT machete perhaps? Hope this question isn't too noobish or blasphemous.

The RC-6 is about as big as it gets for RAT. I wouldn't set my hopes up for a RAT machete either, chances of that happening are slim.

I belive that Jeff has said that they are working on something larger that the RAT-6.

:D I meant currently, RC-6 is as large as it gets for a RAT. Unless you mean weight/thickness then RC-5 is about as large as it gets for a RAT.

There's talk of a RTAK type knife in the future.
I believe Jeff and Mike(RAT Cutlery) designed it during the time they were working with Ontario.
I'm sure a RAT Cutlery expert will jump in here with some details.
Specs:
* 16.5 inch overall length
* 10.25 inch blade w/ drop point
* 3/16" thick 1095 Steel

Jeff has said that a RTAK size blade, or an "overpriced machete" as he likes to call them, is a plan for down the road as of right now, but don't hold your breath. It will be a while.

:thumbup:Thanks for the feedback guys. I thought about buying an RTAK, but I've been mad at Ontario ever since they discontinued the Bagwell series.:grumpy: That was my one chance to own a Bagwell design and they had to go and stop it before I could get one.

Sorry to get off the RAT topic, but Carolina River Rat, don't be too worried. They used a crappy stainless 420 that did no justice to Bagwell's work.

Back on RAT, I can't friggin wait for that RC Chopper!

I hope you will forgive a dumb question. I read somewhere that Jeff said a 10” chopper was a better tool for a traveler in the Amazon rain forest than a machete. I hope I’m remembering that correctly, it was a while ago.

At the time I read stuff on this Rat sub forum. I looked at the Rat site. I read Jeff’s book on safe traveling. I could not find what Jeff actually said, or his reasons for saying it. This was back in the days when Ontario was producing the Rat line, which included the 10” RATAK, but nothing longer. So it seemed that Rat knives was practicing what Jeff preached.

I’m still curious. Since the machete seems to be the universal tool down there, why does Jeff recommend something shorter? If he actually does.

Glad I didn't miss out on anything, Longknife. I suppose one day when I'm a rich man I'll get in touch with Mr. Bagwell and have him make me one. And back on topic: I'm probably gonna get the RC-4 as River Rat's first RAT.

Good choice from what I have read for an all around cutter/user. It's the only blade missing from my RAT family. Let me know what you think of it when you take the plunge.:thumbup:
