What is the future of these "lopped off" knives in cutting competitions such as Blade? .. saw a recent article in Blade that featured many of these in different styles, saying how the wharncliff style allows for a longer area of cut.

They are ugly, ..mostly. Some are horrific.. But, I guess they do the job.

something i heard on the radio a few days ago.. "Ugly is the new Beautiful".

What?
I mean you might dislike wharnies, but to go ahead and classify them as ugly is not what I'd call a smart move. Even as a joke attempt.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's appropriate to call these blades wharncliffe. The ones I've seen (if I'm understanding you correctly) are actually abrupt clip points, like on a seax. Years ago I thought they were ugly too, but now I've grown to appreciate their distinctive lines.

This shape has been used for millennia. And even in this country they've been popular for at least a century or so on various agricultural blades.

DCM, you should post some images of them ugly knives you are talking about so we can see them ugly things.:D

I've always thought that sort of cut off point would make a great chopper ever since I first saw a Martindale Golok. And when I saw more designs like that through the ages from the seaxes to certain Chinese swords to santokus I've come to appreciate that sort of point even more. One day if I ever get to forging my own chopper I would base it on that sort of design. Ranger knives is experimenting with something called the mach-ax based on the same concept. The point on these blades act almost like the point of a thick box cutter.

I know it's not a fixed blade "chopper" like DCM is talking about but it has one of dem ugly warny blades for us to shoot "daggers" at. Hideous :)

Dude. That blade shape looks nothing like what he's talking about. I can't find a stinkin' picture of one right now....

Which Blade mag are we talking about so I can see what "flavor" of wharncliffe we're talking about? Got my curiosity now. :D

Here are some that Roger P. posted in another thread:

Here are a bunch of competition cutters from the 2004 SOS show:

Any of these fit the description?

What Jason Knight is holding is the shape the article is talking about, though the second knife in the top pic is probably considered following the same concept.

The article called that shape a wharncliffe? thats not at all what I think of when I hear the word spoken. or even read it. bet it would make a great chopper though.

Tai Goo's Bush Buddy is also of that thinking on the point (from a previous thread by HTMD)

As is Ivan Campos' Oriental Chopper

I don't care what anybody else thinks, I like these styles. :)

I concur. I particularly like Tai Goo's model, I dont find any of them ugly, they certainly dont have the style of other models but its a nice type of knife.

This is my current chopper with number 2 in the works, I learned a hard lesson about the finishing these completly before ht. CPM M4 bos ht

I don't think I would call them a warncliff. Maybe a reverse tanto style? Either way, some of them, such as SAR's and those two small Burchtree knives, those get my drool on  :D

I'm with KAAK.... those to me are reverse tantos...

Only the little folder really in the first pic up top is what I'd consider a Wharnnie..

And well what one man thinks looks like dog poo another man falls in love with. As its been throughout the ages.

I wouldn't expect that to change anytime soon.
