Ugh. I'm getting interested in carrying a slipjoint knife - like I need another edged tool interest :D

Does anyone have any recommendations on a slipjoint that meets as many of the following criteria as possible:

1) Wharncliff main blade, under 3"

2) Non-stainless steel

3) Brand with consistent quality

4) Anything but jigged bone handles.

5) Reasonably priced ($50 and under would be ideal).

Thanks for your help!

Matthew

Look into Bulldog brand.Might see something you like.Case makes a couple of wharnnies.Copperhead and small trapper.Bone may be a problem.

Thanks Randy. I looked up Bulldog knives, and saw some nice looking pieces. However, the descriptions list "surgical steel" blades, which I usually associate with stainless. Do you know if these are stainless steel blades (I'm looking for non-stainless)?

Thanks,

Matthew

Surgical steel is stainless. They also have carbon steel.
423-894-5102 is their phone# Give them a call.
Knifeworks has a whittler in carbon steel.Bone scales :(

Randy - thanks for the info. I went to the Knifeworks web site, and couldn't find Bulldog brand.

I just noticed that the phone # you listed has a different area code than what is listed at Knifeworks - perhaps you meant a different dealer?

Thanks!

Matthew,

The # 423-894-5102 is to Bulldog kinves in Tn. I have a Bulldog viking whittler with carbon blade and second cut stag that I ordered from them and it is a nice knife. You can see one at www.ndsproducts.com/knifelinks.html This one has bone scales but it will show you the pattern of the knife. Just scroll down to bulldog knives and it is near the bottom of the page. Also while you are there go to Queen cutlery on down the page and scroll down to the Robenson knives and there is a nice wharny half whittler. Case has a Seahorse whittler with stag handles that is real nice but it has the stainless steel. You can see them at www.knifeworks.com I'm sure there are plenty others out there but carbon and no jigged bone makes the hunt more challanging.

Good Luck

How about a nice Queen whittler with cocobolo handles and D2 blades?

cumberlandknifeworks.com has several in stock along with a bunch of other styles that I have been eyeing and considering.

Starfish...

Just as info...
The website that carries lots of Bulldogs is Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Any of the wharncliff whittlers might please you. YMMV

The site is www.eknifeworks.com

I dont think Roger at knifeworks (Bayou La Fourche) carries Bulldogs.

Bill

PS...
They are more than $50 on the site. But you can find them as well at the Bulldog store on Ebay. Maybe even in celluloid with carbon blades.
Good Luck!

I think I might have made a mistake. I don't know if stag handles are considered jigged bone, but some of the knife descriptions I have read indicate that stag is one form of jigged bone.

I like stag. :D

When I think of jigged bone, the best example that comes to mind is the Spyderco Kiwi. That type of handle is the one that doesn't really float my boat.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the pointer. I have been considering Queen as well - nice looking knives! But the whittler doesn't have a wharncliff main blade, which is a desirable feature for me...

Thanks,

Matthew

El Lobo,

Thanks for the pointers. The Bulldogs look great, but I have a hard time telling which are the stainless blades, and which aren't.

Also - and this is a more general question - how can you find out how large the blades are? The specs quote the closed length...

I have obviously been spoiled here at BFC - I'm used to having all this information at my fingertips!!!! :D

Thanks,

Matthew

As both nifrand and 3nails suggested, you can call Bulldog and ask for what you want, within the scales/steel combinations they have, and it will probably be a version of the wharncliff whittler, based on your list. Or maybe ask for a catalog, if you like. Also visit the store on Ebay, the discriptions MAY be more helpful about the steel. It might take a few days for them to add/subtract some listings, so hang in there.

PS...
The Seductress model is 3" closed, about a 2" wharncliff main blade. $45.25 shipped. With carbon steel blades. In buffalo horn or 2nd cut stag.

OK, you're on your own now. :)

LOL, thanks Bill! :)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Looks like I have some more research ahead of me!
